Download Manager

Does anyone know of a shareware download manager that works similar to Internet Download Manager. I like the way IDM works and the proactive way it connects with videos you are watching and asks "Download this video?". Its very good but is not shareware and soon the trial session is over. I need to use a down loader to keep my Amateur Radio Videos from the net.

I do not know about anyone else here but I would strongly recommend you be very careful as most Download Managers are spyware and can really make a mess of your system.
Why do you feel you need such a thing? I am guessing that watching videos stop and start and that can be annoying and if that is the issue lets first look at the browser you are suing and your internet connection.
IE is supposed to download and not show a video until the whole thing is downloaded as I understand it while FF and Chrome will start the minute connected so they can easily stop and start more often as a method but I 'll stop here and await your direction in answering me.

 

Further to RichM's advice and questions, I assume you are actually wanting to download video to store on your computer, rather than just watch it as it streams?
If so there are a few free softwares designed to do just that, one is Youtube Downloader that has been good, though not too sure about the actual install, they are now bundling other stuff such as toolbars you don't want so will not link to it for that reason, though you can find it easily enough but be warned about the bundled rubbish.

I since moved on to AVC, this actually is a software designed to be a video converter, but has a downloader for Youtube and a few other video hosting sites built in.
The download only asks you if you wish to install "Real Player" at the same time, and is just a matter of removing the tick in the box if you don't want it.

Rich, the reason I want such a downloader is I am in study for my next Amateur Radio License. I need to download tutorials on the subject and study inductors, capacitors, relays, and all other things electronic along with the math so I need to go over the vids many times to get it through my thick skull.

1983, 30 years ago I got the full license with a "B" class for two years before that. Still have a working Eddystone all bands valved receiver, an FT7B 50 watt HF transceiver, and FT290 two metre band rig as well.

Hope the downloader section is proving to be what you want Dave, you can also convert the downloaded video to a different format such as WMV for viewing in most media players too.

If needing help in the radio exam stuff, start a thread in the social section and us old hands can possibly help there as well.

Hey guys, to answer a few questions, yes the Philippines has a reciprocal with the US, Unfortunately my last license expired in 2002. I came to the Philippines in 2003 not knowing about the reciprocal, otherwise I would have renewed my US License. So I had to start over at Technician level and have been in study since then. The basic theory of electronics, propagation, operating procedures, etc. etc. are all the same. The differences are of course in districts, rules, license renewal and such. Once a ham always a ham. I live on the tiny island of Camiguin and there is only one other ham here. So, in the event of an emergency we will both be very busy. The bands are not crowded here as there are only about two thousand or so hams in the entire country. Clubs here are spread far apart. In fact a club needs 25 hams to start a club as opposed to only 4 in the States. There are a few other differences but radio theory never changes and hams are the same the world over.
With regard to the down loader, I down loaded the "Any-Converter", it works well but only on specific sites that supports it. Rich was right, I do get annoyed with the stopping and starting when trying to watch a video. I use a little Acer Laptop with SmartBro service. Every time I download anything I always run Malwarebytes to get rid of the spyware and the Avast cleaner to get rid of the extra tool bars. I always run TFC cleaner as well. So I do try to keep my pc clean but I just have to live with Smartbro coverage, its the best we have here right now. I also might give AVC a try and see how that works.

I like AVC, its good for all I need. I was able to download Ham Radio tutorials to study later and AVC is great on Youtube.

Well Rich you were right. I got the AVC and it works great but along with it came "My PC Back-UP" by Amazon. Can't get rid of it. The file is in Crogram files>My Pc Backup. But when I try to delete it I get the message, :the file is open in another location or you don't have permissions.
I cannot get "file Shredder" to delete it either. Since it is a file and not a program I cannot uninstall. Any idea on how I can get rid of it? Thanks.

OK, glad all is sorted, though I did mention to watch for boxes to remove ticks from. Downloads of software are getting worse for this sort of bundled junkware.
