There seems to be controversy about "Adobe Flash Player"? Various opinions state that this program can be detrimental to one's computer. What do our admins have to say concerning the above?

Also, is downloading "Silverlight" an advantage or disadvantage?

I don't use Adobe flash anymore, I haven't had a problem at all with HTML5.

I also don't use Silverlight. You only need it to view some of Microsoft's video's.
Hardly any other sites are using Silverlight anymore.

Although I still have the Adobe Flash player installed as there are still a few video sites still using it, and not the newer and safer HTML5 player. However make sure that if you do use it that it is fully up to date as the hackers are targeting it to unload their malware, the most up to date version is more secure, however still be careful of video sites that will only work with it. Any suspicions, stay away.
As for Silverlight, as Cindy states, only Microsoft use it as far as I know, so may not be worth keeping it installed.

HTML5 is not yet Industry standard, and only a very small number of browsers currently support it -- and even those browsers that do support it, don't do it very well.
When the transition is complete HTML5 will work well and elimate a lot of risks we encounter with Adobe Flash.

I have been using HTML5 for many months now without any issues.
I use Internet Explorer 11 for my browser.

I didn't do too well with IE11 or Firefox version 38.0.1 re that link test.
    IE11 341 out of 555
    Firefox 467 out of 555
Don't know why such low scores.

I agree, Pete. Flash just isn't safe any more.
That's why I went to HTML5 months ago at Bob's suggestion.

OK, how do you switch from Flash to html5? I thought that if a web site is using Flash, you need Flash to view the content. I didn't think you could switch what you're using to view their content.

Firefox does it automatically Tony if the website is using HTML5. The other sites that haven't yet changed, Firefox asks if you wish to use Flash with a warning I think though not actually tried a video recently to be sure.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Adobe Flash Player as long as you have the latest version :grr:

As for the screen showing you need a plug-in update, that IS telling you that you do NOT have the latest version of Flash Player. Click to update.

I must have been asleep all this time as this is the first I have heard of any of this. While I have had occasional issues installing Adobe Flash Player recently, I have never had an issue with it once installed so I see no reason to change.
Pale Moon showed 408 of 555 so I guess I should play with HTML5

If you look at the points for each area and the items that are scored, most of the ones that are absent are not needed anyway.

As I said, I use IE 11 and have been viewing with HTML5 for at least five months now and have not had any issues at all.

I guess since I have never seen the issue using Adobe Flash player, I am reluctant to make the change. For years I listened to everyone touting something I don't even remember the name of in preference to Adobe Reader (ah Foxit) and today you never hear of that. Just like I have tried almost every program that claims to be the same as Adobe Acrobat, before going and buying Acrobat because it is still a mile better in my experience than the the imitators.

I use Foxit Reader and don't even have Adobe Reader installed. Foxit update frequently and I have not had an issue with it in several years. YMMV
