"Display driver stopped responding and has recovered."
Display driver AMD driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered

About a month ago I purchased a new computer. The graphics card that came with it was not as good as my old computer, so I decided to get a new one for my new computer.

The graphics card that came with the machine was a NVIDIA GeForce GT 520. I was playing computer games on one monitor while browsing and watching videos on my second monitor. Although this was a low end card, it still worked fine.

Today I bought a Radeon HD 7770 card and installed it. whenever I open up a game (example World of Warcraft) and log in I get a black screen and the error message stated above. I sometimes have to log off via task manager because it will repeatedly do this.

When installing the card, I noticed it touched my SATA3 port (see attached). After long deliberation I decided to move my SATA2 and SATA3 TO SATA1 and SATA2. I don't know if this would affect it in anyway, but a friend assured me it wouldn't.

My computer specs are the following:

    Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.120503-2030)

    Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.

    System Model: M68MT-S2

    BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG

    Processor: AMD FX(tm)-4100 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.6GHz

    Memory: 8192MB RAM
    Available OS Memory: 8190MB RAM

Page File: 2455MB used, 13924MB available

    DirectX Version: DirectX 11
    DX Setup Parameters: Not found

User DPI Setting: Using System DPI
System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)
    DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled
    DxDiag Version: 6.01.7601.17514 32bit Unicode

Power Supply is 500 Watts. Card said it required 450 Watts and up.

I have already tried uninstalling my driver and reinstalling. Any help would be appreciated, and if I posted in the wrong section if someone could kindly lead me in the right direction. Any further information needed let me know.

    Thank you.

As the website DSTM linked mentions up to date OS and BIOS, could you confirm these are up to date?

Also what is the age of the PSU?
Could you also check in your BIOS what voltages the PSU is outputting, you should be able to check the voltages with SIW as well (free version at the bottom), it's in the 'Sensor' list - http://www.gtopala.c...iw-download.php

If you do download SIW could you also give us the temperatures of the components, again in the 'Sensor' list.

I am not very knowledgeable about this. I will attach a pic of my PSU in my next post

    Attached is my PSU.

I bought this computer less than 2 months ago. I don't know about the model age but I've added a picture below.

I don't know how to check in my BIOS for this. Is the SIW results good enough?

    Yes I have updated everything.

While those processor temperatures are a bit odd (how is it down at 10c~?), that isn't really a problem, it looks to me like your power supply is faulty assuming those readings are correct (only way to really confirm is a PSU tester), the -12v measurement is too low it should be within 10%~ of -12v and the +5v one should be within 5-10%~.
Maybe it is pushing the PSU too far, your old card drew about 50w less power at it's top end (30w vs 80w in your new card), they probably idle at similar watts (10~).

Other people have suggested getting a better PSU, do you suggest the same? Honestly I'm not sure why they read as 10c, room temperature is around 20.5c - 21c.

Seeing that the temp sensor for your CPU seems quite a bit off being accurate I couldn't definitely guarantee the PSU is at fault (as we can't be sure your Motherboard is reporting the correct values), but based on what you've said like putting this graphics card in started causing problems and that PSU looking faulty, I would recommend either buying a new PSU 550w or above, or if you have a friend who is willing (and has a PSU above 500w) try their PSU in your computer to see if the same problem occurs when you load your game.

I upgraded my PSU. I now have

"Corsair Enthusiast Series TX650M 650W ATX Modular Power Supply Active PFC 120MM Fan 5 Year Warranty"

    Still same problem

I will be returning the graphics card now. Does anyone have a suggestion for what graphics card I should try instead of the Radeon HD 7770 one? Now that my PSU is upgraded I'm not limited to one that requires only one 6 pin power source.

Also as a reminder my motherboard is:

    BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG

Hi sorry for the late reply.

I'm not sure what your budget is as you haven't mentioned figures? Seeing that the HD 7700 is about $150-170 (Canadian) I'll stick around that for the time being.

As I see it your main option would be going for a $200 HD7850 - http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102998

You could go for a HD6870 around $180 which would be an improvement over the HD7700 but in terms of performance the extra $20 would be well worth it for the HD7850.
