As some of you know every once in a while I find it necessary to show my ignorance about certain basics. :snckr:

Prior to getting this laptop I never had to concern myself with recovery partitions, etc. I always had my system disks supplied by the manufacturer. As a result I had a single partition as my C drive that occupied the entire HDD.

OK so now I have this one with 3 partitions on the Drive. However, when I look in disk management two of the partitions appear to be empty when I know that they should not be. See attached. manage.png

However when I look at my backups in Acronis they clearly appear not to be empty at all. I am at a loss to understand this. acronis.png
    What am I missing?

Assign a drive letter to the drives and you'll get a real read of the drive data. Without a drive letter it is considered hidden and will not show the true amount of space used.

I wasn't aware of that either, BeeCeeBee.

I thought if the Partition was recognized, it would show the amount used.

    Learn something new everyday.

Sometimes I've had to play a trading game with drive designations to get C to be my boot drive .... or, to get my DVD drive to be the final letter. :)

Thanks for the info guys. I never noticed before that the drive read as empty in Disk Management. I was actually a bit concerned but Acronis did display the the percentages that I expected. The rest was just for my my own understanding. That being said, I am not going to assign drive letters but it is nice to know that it was that simple.

A quick look and my recovery partition isn't allocated a drive letter either, like you not worried as I burned a recovery disk when I first got this machine. Trouble is I then upgraded the thing to the Professional afterwards, so If I do require to do a full recovery I will have to use the upgrade again, don't know how I would stand with that either as to whether it would have to be paid for again or if the same product key would work again. Fingers crossed that I never need to find out.

The key will work if you have to recover the OS.

Thanks Bob. I will continue doing as much as possible to avoid needing it though.
