    Hi everyone,
I'm not sure this is the right place to put this, so feel free to change if you want. It seemed best to me. Anyway.
My family live in the middle of nowhere, and as such, we can't afford to be picky with internet providers. We have Service Electric. In our household we have two desktop Macs, using a router to connect, plus assorted laptops, etc. We have a modem from service electric. Our internet has always been abominably slow, with download speed around 30 kb/s. At any rate, a few weeks ago, every time one of us would connect to the internet, or sometimes even when we wouldn't, our modem would make the dial-up tone, like the one from when the internet had just been invented. It's been happening more and more regularly, and it now happens around 7-10 times per day. Not only does it go off in the extremely early hours of the morning, waking us up, but it's also rather annoying. Does anyone know why it's doing this, and how to get it to stop?? Thanks!!!!
    Theresa

Hello Theresa and Welcome to Computer Help Forums! :)

We will probably need to know a lot more before we can fully get to the bottom of this. I take it that no matter how bad your internet options are you are no longer on Dial up. Actually that was more a question than a statement.

For the time being, it could be a number of things that are causing this not the least of which is some form of malware. Is this dial up sound related to any specific computer?

If you are using Internet Explorer as you browser click on tolls and then internet options. Open the "Connections" tab and select "Never Dial a Connection" You may have to do this on each computer if you cannot identify the right one. This hopefully will stop the dialup and then we can start to investigate the cause when we know a bit more.

I would first contact Service Electric - it's their responsibiliby to provide an Internet connection. Check what speed they say they will provide.

Other than that, you may want to bypass the router and connect directly with a single computer and see how that works. That test could eliminate the router as a problem.

Swap Ethernet cables. A bad Ethernet cable could cause packet collisions which would slow the network.

I'm guessing you have a DSL connection. The further your are from the Central Office, the slower your connection will be. If you bad wiring between you and the Central Office, you speed may deteriate when it rains.

Also if you have DSL - check you filters. You may have a bad filter. See if there's a difference when the phone is in use.

    Just some thoughts.
