I've just finished creating a landscape in Krita (a program similar to Ps) and saved the file to my usual folder as a PNG. I stupidly closed the program and declined the option to save it (as a Krita document) as I'd already saved it as a PNG, but when I open my folder it's not there.

If I search my PC it finds the file, but there is no thumbnail and it won't open it (I just get the Missing Shortcut message about windows searching for the file, if I want to locate it myself click browse). If I drag the file back into Krita, I'm told it doesn't exit.

If I go to the properties of the file, it's location is said to be in the folder I saved it to, and yet the file itself is not there when I open said folder.

I'm desperate to recover this - is there anything I can do??

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello and welcome Our Jud,

You should be able to open that file with a browser - e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc. If using Internet Explorer, use Cntl - O keyboard shortcut to get to the Open dialog box. Then navigate to the folder where the file is located.

But it's not in the folder. The only way I can find any refernce to the file is when I search for it, and according to the properties it's in the folder I saved it to, but it isn't there.

If I try to open it with a browser I get the same Missing Shortcut message.

I'm trying to understand why when you search for the file, Windows finds it, but you can't navigate to it. What is the path that shows when you search for the file?

    The path is: C:\Users\FDgaming\Desktop\landscapes.

'landscapes' being the folder on my desktop to which I saved the file. But it's not in there.

If I drag the file from the search results onto my desktop and try to open it, I get the Missing Shortcut message.

Out of habit (because of using GIMP) I normally export files, but for whatever reason this time I chose to save it. I wonder if this is the problem.

I've just run a test by saving a test image in the same program and it saved it ok.

I think I messed up when saving the other - because after saving the image and closing the program, I got a save confirmation message which I declined as I thought it was asking if I wanted tos ave a backup as a Krita document, but when I just did the test, I didn't get that message, so maybe it was asking me to confirm something else that I should have said yes to.

Although that still doesn't explain why a search finds the file.

Maybe it's a hidden file. When you get properties while in search, is there a checkmark noting that it's a hidden file?

    No, it's unchecked.

I think I'm going to have to just accept it's gone. It must have corrupted during the save process. I'll have to do it agian, after all it only took me four hours :bnghd:

Thanks very much for your help, Tony :)

You could try the free version of Recuva and see if it can recover a copy of it.

Thanks, Rustys, but I bit the bullet and did it the hard way (painted it again).

If nothing else it's taught me a lesson about the necessity to do regular saves on lengthy projects.

My guess you will paint it better a second time, anyway.:)

Thanks, DSTM, you're actually correct. The first time I was making it up as I went along, so the second time the finished painting was already in my head - I just had to recreate it.

Shameless plug (it's the second one down):
