Dell PE 1600SC, Windows 2000 Server, and Buffalo USB 2.0 hard drive

    Hello!

I just bought a Buffalo DriveStation 1TB external USB hard drive, model
HD-CE1.0TU2, to connect to a new client's old PE1600SC server running
Windows 2000 Server. The drive has a feature where it will power itself on
as soon as it sees a USB connection, and it connects, turns on for a few
seconds, then turns off, without ever showing the drive in Windows Explorer.

This server also has a CERC ATA 100 RAID array and runs OpenManage Array
    Manager...a really old 3.4.1 version.

Does anyone know if the problem is likely to be the USB port, or if
OpenManage Array Manager is somehow interfering with seeing a USB drive?

The drive works fine on any XP system, and it is supported under 2000 per
Buffalo, so the OS should not be the problem.

I will go back to add a PCI USB 2.0 card Friday or Saturday to see if that
    helps.

    Thank you for your input!

    Gregg

Apostrophes: when in doubt, leave them out! You will be correct more often
    than not.

Its = Belonging to it. For example, "Look at the sky. Its color is blue."
It's = It is. For example, "It's hot today."
It's = It has. For example, "It's been nice talking to you."
Its' = completely incorrect usage. Stop it!

    Partially answering my own question:

I installed an ADS Tech Turbo USB 2.0 card # USBX-2000
    (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...spx?c=us&l=en&s=biz&cs=RC1093635&sku=A0291717)
that claims to support Windows 2000. I bought it from Fry's a while back,
but it is the same card Dell sells.

The Buffalo drive is now recognized and works, but apparently at very slow
speed. The server has Windows Server 2000 SP4, all patched, including the
correct date or newer USB 2.0 support files, per
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319973/EN-US/

Backup Exec 9.1.4691 only gets about 120MB/minute data rate, so this 148GB
backup will take an estimated 19 hours.

What am I missing in getting Windows Server 2000 to use the card at USB 2.0
    speed?
