I have a Dell Inspiron i5749 laptop windows 7 pro. When you change the screen brightness from the keyboard a popup came up on the screen showing a bar of the brightness level. Same with the volume when changed from the keyboard. This was there two days ago. Now its gone. Any ideas how to get it back.

Typically these adjustments are done using an Fn key in combination with an F key. For instance, to decrease brightness, you may be have to press the F4 key while holding down the Fn key. On some machines, you can configure them so that the when you press an F key, it assumes you want Fn + the F key. It's kind of like a Fn Lock function.

Maybe you're Fn Lock function has become either engaged or disengaged. If you usually use the Fn key in combination with another key, try making the adjustment without the Fn key. If you don't normally use the Fn key, try using the Fn key in combination with what ever key your normally use.

On this laptop its the f11 and f12 key to adjust brightness. Those keys alone. Tried what you said. Still the same.
