If you are using the computer with the display issues, then you should be able to try a system restore or access the device manager to rollback the video driver.

I can get online with the window shrunken to fit the part of the display that is working. But the left half of the start menu is hidden.

And that would be on bootup with the F8 key? Is there a choice of how far back to go?

If you cannot see to access your Control Panel then a system restore using the F8 key is the best option.
    There are detailed directions here......

Just did system restore from the control panel using the step-by-step guide in Chris Fehily's book on W7- this book is written for non-techs like myself and it taught me to use the computer and the os. It didn't work but he suggests picking an older restore point and trying again, which I will do now.

So you can reach the control panel?
If doing a system restore using a different restore point doesn't work can you access the device manager?
If you can and the using an older system restore point has not corrected the display problem, select your video driver in the device manager and roll back the driver to the previous one.
Let us know how you fare.

Yes, if press the windows logo key, the right-side part of the start menu comes up. But I can't access any local programs, which are on the left side. Just tried system restore again using a restore point about two weeks ago- long before this problem came up- still no joy. Just after startup I still briefly get the black window with the title bar reading cmd.exe (I think) but it's gone too fast to get a good look at it. It shows very little else, though.

I'll try the sequence you suggest in this post.

Update- followed this sequence, it tells me that the driver is working correctly, and I see it shows a newer version than what I had, but the option to roll it back is ghosted and not available.

On that screen, choose to uninstall the driver, then restart.

I thought of doing that, but will the screen then not work at all?

In theory, you will be left with a workable screen, but the icons and text will be very large because you will still need a working driver. Go ahead and delete the driver, then post back with the computer's service tag # and one of us will then give you the link to the correct driver.

Just in case everything goes south, here's the info beforehand:

    Dell Inspiron 519
    service tag 8BPVJG1
    express service code 18122848561

OK, driver uninstalled, screen is full width now, with oversized elements as you predicted. What now?

Sorry, my reply was blended into your post. But the display is now full size, just needs slight adjustment to clean up slightly blocky elements. My previous experience tells me that this is a slight adjustment in resolution needed.

    OK, current situation:

Full use of screen restored, as normal
Screen res still needs some tweaking, I'll work on it
Many functions now verrry slow, esp. Firefox bootup
The original issue, jumpy and sticky responses, has returned, possibly slightly more in play

I'll fool around with it for a while and report back. Thank you for your help. Maybe I have to live with the original issue.

I think that the original issue, Firefox, can possibly be solved by either resetting Firefox or uninstalling and reinstalling it.

    To refresh....
Click the menu button and select help .
    Choose Troubleshooting Information. ...
Select the Refresh Firefox button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page.
To continue, click Refresh Firefox in the confirmation window that opens.
Firefox will close to refresh itself.

See if this alleviates the problem.

I actually had this in mind once the dust settled. Also, I'm getting a message from FF to refresh thru their menu to relieve slow startup.

I'll have to get back to all of this a little later today and I'll post back with the gory details then. Once again, I appreciate the help I've received here, if not for that I'd be in deep doo doo.
