Ok, I have to go soon as well, so I'll leave you with this:

Whether or not you use safe mode, or normal mode, you need to try rolling back the video driver. If rolling back the driver isn't an option, then you'll have to try system restore.

Once all that is done, then I would suggest resetting and/or reinstalling Firefox (a FF backup may be needed).

No, I stopped when MS was planning to drop support some time back. Don't recall the date, was at least a year ago.

Then why not just wipe the entire drive and install Windows 7 on on it?

I thought of that. I have the original disc that I bought. But what happens to data and programs, bookmarks, etc?

Vista and W7 are on separate hard drives- two drives in this machine

I'm afraid I have to leave now. Thanks all for the help. I'll check back in tomorrow.

Same question why not just make it a Seven only system?

Well, I don't plan to use Vista any more. But can I re-use the W7 OS disc that I installed from?

IIRC, there is a key code that comes with the disc so you can use it only once.

Also, what about the local programs and other data that are on this W7?

Since you are reinstalling same OS on the same system then it is fine.
Like what? Back then up the you can simply transfer the documents/pictures and such.

    If programs then reinstall.

Now you WILL have to go to the Dell web site and down load the proper drives so they can be installed.

OK, I just ducked out of my meeting to reply, but I can't do anything until tomorrow. If I need help, I'm hoping I can come back here for it then.

As far as reinstalling programs, I don't have a list of them so not sure how to get them all back.

We can defiantly discuss it further so you can make an informed decision.

    OR

    Fix the seven you have.

    Like stated before your decision.

OK, it's another day, hoping for success today. Just spent an hour or so cruising the net for drivers for my Dell Inspiron 519 and Windows 7. One big issue is that this machine predates W7 and Dell does not have any W7 drivers. If possible, I want to repair the current W7 and not get into the Vista, which is on the original hard drive. W7 is on a second HD in the machine.

The graphics driver is ATI Radeon HD3200, version 8.850.0.0. ATI was absorbed by AMD. The AMD site lists an automated procedure for updating the ATI driver, which is how I got into the mess I now have. I am as yet unable to reverse course and get back to my former situation, in which the only problem was occasional stickiness and/or jumpiness in response to mouse and keyboard input. The AMD site showed a typical licensing agreement, looking for a click on an accept button, but no such button appeared. Ran thru the whole thing several times both yesterday and today. But it was via that site that the current problems arose. The site as yet has not responded to my contact request.

    So- what's the next step?

You should be able to use the Dell Vista video driver for the Win 7 operating system.
If you need help getting it, let us know.

Thanks for the reply. I was there yesterday, in fact it remembers my service tag #. But after selecting drivers and downloads, there is no option "Video" and the only OS supported are Windows XP or BIOS

Okay, in that case, have you tried to rollback the driver through the Device Manager?
You can also, using the F8 key, try a system restore or selecting the Last Known Good Configuration.

Ok, so the display was so messed up that you couldn't do anything, but now you can?
