Rich and Starbuck both make some solid security recommendations and of course most of it depends on how skilled the user is.

Even Rich has admitted his security recommendation (Emsisoft) he has found to be overly aggressive.
That doesn't help the average user.

Personally I've never found Emsisoft to be over aggressive.
I very rarely see any notification that something has been blocked.
One thing I have found though, is that it takes longer and does slow the system down for awhile when updating the definitions.
Nod32 updates in half the time.

I have Nod32 on one machine and have no complaints so far.

Absolutely I always listen to his recommendations and he knows that. What I am saying is what he uses himself for his own protection is superfluous because of his wide training and of course you are correct it really depends where the individual is surfing as for how long they can last without infection.

That is correct Pete by my experience as well the update procedure for Emsisoft can become an issue if the user doesn't have a really good connection. That is especially true when installing for the first time. That is one of the reasons I get my program installs from either Bleeping Computer or Multi Visions, my Emsisoft provider. And once installed you would never know it is there.
