Hello. I'm trying to reinstall an operating system on a computer I built from parts from other computers. The hard drive that I put in the computer already has an operating system on it but won't boot, most likely because the hard drive is no longer paired with the same hardware it once was. I have a windows 7 install disc in the drive and have set the bios to boot from CD, but here's where I have a problem. Although the keyboard is detected on the post screen (I'm able to enter and navigate through the bios options), when the computer gets to the part where it asks me to "press any key to boot from CD" the keyboard doesn't work anymore, and the computer proceeds to asking me if I want to boot in safe mode or boot normally (the keyboard doesn't work at this point either). any suggestions? I'm off to goodwill to pick up a PS2 keyboard to see if that solves the problem.

I take it your using a USB Keyboard, somewhere in the Bios settings is a setting for when the keyboard is enabled ;)

Without specific system and Bios information I'm afraid I can't be more specific with the answer and while were sorting that out I'm sure you will be able to look through your bios settings and find it :)

Having to use a PS2 keyboard is normal. At least thats been my experience. You'll find that when the new OS is fully installed and updated you will be able to use your USB keyboard again if you wish.

Until the operating system has booted, a USB keyboard is usually dead once the BIOS has set the operating system to start up. It is momentarily live at first power up, hence why you can get into the BIOS to alter boot order.
However, there are adapters available to use a USB keyboard into a PS2 socket, have a look here at this link=
