    Hey,

I'm gonna cut straight to point if you allow me: My computer CANNOT SHUTDOWN (the normal way)
When I push the shutdown button, at any given time, it will try to shutdown for 5-6 mins, then give me a blue screen. This is what it says:

    DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

    TECHNICAL:
    ***STOP: 0X0000009F (0X0000000000000003,0XFFFFFA8006D03060,0XFFFFF8000047EAD8,0XFFFFFA8007FE5E10)

    collecting data for crash dump...
    initializing disk for crash dump...
    beginning dump of physical memory
    dumping memory to disk: 100
    physical memory dump complete

contact system admin or technical support for further assistance bla bla...

You guys got any idea? I mean, I'm guessing I'm missing a rather important driver?

    thx on forehand,

    Laurent

Also I've looked into it, and I see a lot of 'Customer experience improvement program' (Error 80004005) errors (they're marked RED) and a lot of Application errors (iexplorer, internet?)
Look this a lot of data, I have no idea what to post and what not. I'll start with this :)

On investigation it seems that the issue may be connected with your antivirus program. Which one are you using?

Can you answer this question please...then we'll move forward to a possible cure..

:) at the moment I'll go along with Frank, as he has more experience than I, and it would take quite a while to find the relevant info from the logs if your not used to viewing them. when we have a relevant stop code to work with ;)

Thankyou for getting back to us. I use Avast myself, and have not had a problem of this nature before, so I'm now thinking we should look elsewhere for a solution.

I'd be interested to know how long you have had this problem...is it just recently?

In the meantime check that your windows updates are fully up to date (You should have Service Pack 1 installed).

How: Click the start/flag button and choose Windows Updates.

When the window opens, also check that you are receiving updates from Microsoft Update. If you are then you will see the words "You receive updates: For Windows and other Microsoft products"

If you don't see the above wording, then click on the link provided to receive these updates. From memory I think the link reads "Learn more"

Needless to say, please download and install all of the updates available. And then get back to us...

Checked the windows updates, and had over 6 updates due lol. Downloaded them all, and shuts down normally as of old now
    Thanks a bunch Frank!
Strange that the little flag thing didn't notify me on time...?

Eh, it did shut down properly after the updates and once after that, but now it's back to NOT shutting down at all again... My hair is going gray I think :)

    Mine to!!...

There's a few things that this could be. Can you check the device manager for any yellow question marks or exclamation marks.

Click Start > Type > Dev > Select Device Manager.
    Please report findings.
Note: Pay close attention to the entries under Network Adapters.

Hi. Could you run CHKDSK as well.
chkdsk C: /F /R from command prompt, taking note of spaces.

Originally was this an upgrade or clean install?

Also try shutting down in Safe Mode.

AVG, Avira and AVAST are frequent causes of 0X0000009F DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE BSOD.

Click on Start, type msconfig and hit Enter. Disable all the applications listed in the Startup tab, then go to the
Services tab and place a check mark next to Hide all Microsoft Services.Next click on Disable all Services.
Click Apply and restart the computer. If no BSOD is shown, begin re-enabling one by one each Service and each
Startup application until you discover which one is causing the BSOD.

Frank: Did what you asked, found nothing.
Allheart: Did what you asked, unchecked all but avast! seems to be shutting down OK now... I'll see after I worked a few hours on my computer if it still shuts down (I hear my hard disk is being burdened severely, however I don't know by what --> it's making very loud click-clack noises?)
DSTM: didn't do anything yet that you suggested, if it shuts down properly and continues to do so, I'll leave it at that alright, thank you loads anyway!

thank you all for tips and tricks :)

I think most here would agree that the click clack noise you are hearing is probably a sign that your HDD is failing. I would strongly advise you to back up your personal files to an external media as soon as you are able.

Absolutely. It's never a good sign when your hard drive starts clicking and clacking.....

Would have been a good idea to run a CHKDSK diagnostic as suggested.[IMG]

Take heed of the advice to get everything backed up as soon as possible, if you have an external hard drive copy everything over to that. If you don't have such a drive, make sure you have enough disks or go buy an external drive.
Any mechanical clicking from a hard drive is usually bad news for the drive.

Guys, this might be the problem to many small seemingly unimportant issues (little program crashes etc)... Didn't want to bother with these things, but it seems to be quite moderate then?
Also I looked at the prices of hard disks, and I fell off my chair... Any advice lol?

edit: as in a good hard disk, s-ata or external, which is best? And good value please if you guys can think of anything, I don't have too big a wallet :(
    thanks a bunch

OK, just as general advice, unless you do need mega space for storing large files such as video or long running music, you will be hard pushed to quickly fill a 500GB drive. So set that as a maximum target, twice that size in the 1 tetrabyte things is tempting, but are you really going to need all that space?

As it is the internal drive that appears to be failing, it is an internal drive you will need to replace it. External drives are only for extra storage space and for containing back up of your precious data. (though operating systems can be run off an external drive, speed is a big issue.)

Other folk will come up with many different ideas as to the make and models of internal hard drives, but do take notice of opinions regarding the most reliable makes.

If you don't as yet have an external drive, I do recommend you obtain one any way as soon as finances permit it. There is nothing worse than what just may happen to you and soon, the hard drive internally fails and you lose all your data.

Once you do have an external drive, there are quite a few various free backup and image making programs that will make a complete image or copy, of everything on your internal drive and place that image on the external drive, as the best full backup you can have.

    Nev.

The severe flooding in Thailand has created a shortage in hard disk drives.
More than 40% of all hard drives are manufactured there. These plants
have had to shut down. The higher costs and scarcer supply have driven the
prices way up. Increased prices will remain until the last quarter 2012.
