When you delete a file, the files doesn't just disappear. It stays on your hard drive. Windows marks the file as free space so it can use that space for other files. The amount of time it takes to erase the unused space depends on the amount of unused space you have. I haven't tried it with this particular software. The last time I erased empty space was several years ago. It took hours.

Well it finally has completed ( with warnings its says ) but also I got a message in the task bar that my C drive was low. I had a look & it only has 50mb left available of 900 ?
So not good news. I fear I cannot sell a computer that has hardly any disc space. Is there any way I can undo the damage that Eraser has caused?
    Quite worried.

I don't understand why you would be left with only 50 mb of hard disk space. There are options.

    1) Use the recovery partition to return the computer to factory condition. Seth suggested this in post #19.
    2) Upgrade to Windows 10. Seth suggested this in post #3.
    3) Go to the Eraser forum and ask for help. I'm going to follow thru and do this because I want an answer. The site is http://eraser.heidi.ie/forum/forums/eraser-support.2/

You should also be aware that Microsoft is ending support for W7. This means no more security updates. I mention that because whoever you sell it to, probably isn't going to be happy when they immediately start getting Microsoft messages telling them to stop using Windows 7 because it's a security risk.

It gets worse. Have now restarted as suggested & I now only have 1 mb left?
Tried that f11 suggestion & just got a poor quality screen with no instructions. At what point should I press f11 & how many times?
As regards Windows 10, assume it wont be cheap so would have to add the cost to what I hope to get for it. My thinking was that any buyer would want to pay less & make their own decision regarding windows ten or sticking with 7.
Sadly at the moment it is probably worthless. I am grateful to you all for the kind advise but I am not very good with computers as you will have gathered.

If you're ok with 7 on it, then do one of the following to restore it to factory condition. You can reset it from within W7 itself, and it will give you the option to keep your files, or erase everything and install a new copy of W7 with no personal programs or data.

Windows 10 can be installed for free using your windows 7 product key there is no charge. If you do a clean install like Seth has mentioned you will be good to go. All it will take is a little of your time and we can help with the process. Sorry Seth you beat me to the punch that would work also.

It won't be as easy, but we can easily walk you through a W10 install. It depends on if you want to sell it with W7 or W10, noting the warnings I gave you about W7.

It's not a matter of being dumb. Everybody has different talents and knowledge depending on what they're "in to".

The product key is a sticker on the computer. It looks like this:

I am with Seth on that you will most likely have a better shot selling it with Windows 10 than 7. I believe with a oem computer aka a HP you can just install windows 10 and it will activate cause the product key may be in the bios. Please correct me if I am wrong. I sort of remember doing a HP once and just installing 10 without the key. You could also go here and install this program and it will give you your key.https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/
