Change of LicenseMODE

    Hi all,

does anybody know the procedure to change the licensemode for Terminal
    Server on Windows 2003 server?
Microsoft might, but I've not been able to track down the information on
their website(s) and have not (yet) been contacted by a microsoft
technician. They seem to be unable to dial my telephone number. And I do
not look forward to another lenghty sessions with numerous not
knowledgable people on the microsoft side of the telephone connection.

At the moment it has a mode of: Remote desktop for maintenance. This
resticts (now that's a surprise) access to two sessions, instead of the
    five needed.
What mode do I need for Terminal server access with five sessions and
how do I activate this new setting? Please be as specific as you can be?

    Thanks for any usable advice.

  2. You can set it using wither UI or the regkey.
    - Using UI
Go to 'Terminal Server Configurations' (Start ->Administrative
Tools ->Terminal Services -> Terminal Services Configurations')
On the right pane, you will see the licensing settings saying that the
licensing mode is set to 'Remote Desktop for maintenance' . Double click on
that. The wizard will open up with the options for setting the mode.
You will have two options either Per User or Per Device. Set the appropriate
    one according to your requirement.
For more derails, please check the link:

    - Using Registry Key
You can set the value of the reg key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\CurrentControlSet\Control\Termi nalServer\Licensing
    Core\PolicyAcOn
And the possible values of this key with their meaning is:
case 1 :if key PolicyAcOn not exists, it means 'remote desktop for
    administration'
case 2: if the value of PolicyAcOn is 4, it means 'per user'
case 3: if the value of PolicyAcOn not is 4, it means 'per device'

    Hope that helps!
    Thanks
    Silvia

    Hi,

    Here is a summary:

    1. Install Terminal Server as well as Terminal Server Licensing
    using control panel--add/remove programs--add/remove
windows components. When prompted set the licensing mode
to match your purchased TS CALs, either Per User or Per Device.

    2. Activate your TS Licensing server by opening up TS Licensing
(licmgr.exe), right-clicking on the server name and choosing Activate
    Server

    3. Install your purchased TS CALs by opening up TS Licensing,
right-clicking on the server name and choosing Install Licenses

    4. Open up Terminal Services Configuration (tscc.msc), click on
Server Settings on the left, and then check that the licensing mode
    is set properly

You can open up Help and Support on your server and search
for Terminal Server Licensing. There is lots of information including
    step-by-step instructions on the above.

    Thanks.

    Dear TP,

thank you for your reply. The problem is not how to install
TS/Licensing. This has been done succesfully. Per User CAls have been
asked for () and their key has been
entered in the TS licence wizard. No question whatsoever is asked about
the licencemodus. After this, when the licencemodus is checked in tscc,
it (still) tells me the licencemodus is: 'Remote desktop for
maintenance'. So my problem persists, and persists, and ....

    Hi,

Just to clarify, have you gone to Add/Remove Programs,
    add/remove windows components, and installed
Terminal Server? This is required in order to change the
licensing mode to Per User or Per Device. This is separate
    from TS Licensing.

Depending on your version of Server 2003 it will prompt
you for the license mode during the install. If not, set the
license mode after restarting the computer using Terminal
    Services Configuration.

    Thanks.

    Dear TP,

I will check out your last suggestion as soon as I can. Because as only
two Terminal Server sessions are permitted right now, I have to await my
    turn.
But do I understand correctly that you state that: 1) installing the
Terminal Server component enables me to change the licensing mode (from:
"Remote desktop for maintenance" to either: "Per User" or "Per Device")?
and 2) It will do so either during the install (of Terminal Server) or
after rebooting the server, using Terminal Services Configuration?

    Yes, you understanding appears correct.

You can connect directly to the server console session by
using the /console (older RD client versions) or /admin
command line switch (newer client versions). This will
    effectively give you three logons.

    Start-->Run-->mstsc /console

    or

    Start-->Run-->mstsc /admin

You will need to restart the server to complete the
installation of Terminal Server so the other users will
need to logoff at some point.

After restart verify in Terminal Services Configuration
that the licensing mode is Per user since that is what
    you own.

    Thanks.
