CDROM Drives should always be Drive O:

Discussion in 'Microsoft Windows' started by letterman@invalid.com, Apr 7, 2009.

  1. I got tired of moving around my CD drives when I added flash drives
and other external stuff. I figured out that CD's should always be
Drive O: The reason is because like an O, cd's are ROUND !!!!

Now you know the whole story !!!

Mine tend to be R: (for reader) or W: (guess ...)

I changed my own to W long ago-- maybe in Bush's first term! And I'm not
sure O is doing any better or different! Here was my write-up for
    that...

    CD-R/W Drive Letter Change

Using Device Manager, I changed my CD-R/W letter from E: to W:...

"Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab, open CD-ROM branch, D-Clk
CD-ROM for Properties, Settings tab, enter 'W' for both start/end drive
    letter, OK,
    OK".

    Then, I ran PC Mag's COA2...
    http://www.pcmag.com/
.... to change system references. You must 1st insert a formatted CD (or
be told the addresses don't exist!) Then, enter "E:\" (or whatever) for
old address & "W:\" for new. The "Change Now" button will light up.

I was surprised to see, in the "Detail Report" screen, it changed INIs
on my D:partition. I didn't see a mention of it in the "Review Change
Records" screen-- maybe I missed a page; it's possible. Anyway, the
    references were indeed now W:.

The only Shortcuts fixed were three on the START, Documents, recent
list. On C:, only WINDOWS\winhelp.ini had a reference, not System.ini
nor Win.ini. On D:, CPQS\aqr.ini and CPQS\ACC\AQR.INI were fixed. Eight
Registry entries seemed clearly to be importantly and well changed.
There were references, in the Registry, it would not change, because
they were binary. These were in MRU (Most Recently Used) lists, making
    them of little consequence.

Me thinks you're getting it right, but for the wrong reason.
In ms arcane way for letting users access volumes; the second
Optical Disc Drive (both CDs and DVDs) has to be 'P' for me, but
the first one is 'O' for 'Optical'.

Now, why they aren't accessed by the volumes VolumeName ...?!?
(Differentiated by the volumes underlying serial-number for
volumes with nonexistent VolumeName or in case when several
    identical VolumeNames are present simultaneously.)

I could have used R: because it's only a reader, but O: made more
sense. Now that external burner I had connected was on P: because all
it did was P:iss me off !!!! :)

LOL. Did you check the Registry & .ini's to see whether anything needed
    changing? To get .ini's...

    (1) "START, Find, F/F"
    (2) Named............... *.ini
    (3) Containing text... E:\
    (presuming it originally was E:\.)

Use RegEdit for the Registry, but ignore all MRU's (Most Recently
    Used's).
