Hi Musicmax and welcome to Computer Help Forums!

Can you play commercial CDs on this drive? Next, you seem to be talking about "recorded music" what is the source of the music and what program are you using to burn it onto the cd?

Right click on "My Computer" and then select "manage"from the drop down menu. Select "device manager"and look to see if there are any warning icons appearing next to the device.

Assuming that there is none, the issue is probably not driver related. That being said, device manager will not tell you if there is a hardware problem with the optical lasers. Also, the drive uses different components to read DVDs and CDs so one working and the other not is not uncommon with a broken drive.

Make sure that the data on the recorded disk is actually there. Have you played it anywhere else?

If the disc works elsewhere and not on your drive you can try a driver update and keep your fingers crossed. If it does not then the issue is probably software related.

If you don't know how to locate the drivers please post the make and model of the drive and we will source them for you. You can get that information from your device manager. Also what make and model computer are you using?

Just a few questions so we can have this looked at.

    1. What format are you creating for this music? (MP3 etc.)
    2. What are you using for a player?
    3. Have you tried any of your CDs in another computer?

Despite what I may have said earlier it would be wise to check for updated drivers for the drive. I am unable to locate that model number in the Sony Support site and I try not to recommend 3rd pary sites for drivers. Where are you located.

Also please check back in about an hour from this post as I expect someone here with real hardware expertise.

Sorry I actually meant firmware not drivers. Although it does seem like the problem is software related based on a consensus.

I will probably be criticized for over simplification here but let me give this a try.

Firmware has nothing to do with Nero or any other installed software. It is a small program for the hardware that basically tells that hardware what its function is. In your case the CD/DVD drive is just a collection of electronic parts until something tells it what it is supposed to be. Firmware is subject to the same problems as any other "software" (and I will be told by some that it isn't software) and may need to be upgraded or reinstalled.

Drivers, on the other hand, are what tell your operating system what commands are necessary to make a particular piece of hardware obey your instructions.

Simply put, Windows with the proper drivers may be sending the right message to your drive, but without proper firmware the drive will not know that it is capable of performing the task.

As I said, an over simplification but you can obtain firmware over the net in the same way as you can drivers.

    Hi Musicmax

I'm wondering if this is a licensing problem, I had a similar problem across a network connection, wmp wouldn't play music off another PC's hard drive, and for the life of me and even banging my head off the desk don't help, but I did something and got a message saying that it was downloading the necessary licenses, and hey presto everything started working properly.
