May I recommend that Inexperienced users use the ATF cleaner program as follows

    Step One
    [IMG] Temporary File Cleaning
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. and save it to your Desktop or other location where you can find it. [IMG]

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
This will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. please move them to a different directory first.

    Notes for Windows Vista users:
On Windows Vista that Windows Temp is disabled, to empty Windows Temp ATF-Cleaner must be Run as an Administrator.
Prefetch has been disabled on Windows Vista. As Atribune are not sure the effects that emptying prefetch on Windows Vista will have for the time being it won't enable that function.

I've got CCleaner installed but have been hesitant to use it until now lest I inadvertently did something and the computer went poof!

Really appreciate the information, including cautions, added here - thank you!

Mara, it's a very easy and safe way of clearing cookies, temp' Internet files etc etc, I tend to use it it each time I shut down as a little house keeping.
Please take note of others comments though regarding the Registry cleaning.

Thanks for the heads up to remember what others have said about using a 'registry cleaner', I4N - I used to blithely one every couple days (eep!) and now steer completely clear of them.

Love love love the Revo Uninstaller and join with you in recommending it, Jelly Bean. It's especially great for a non-tech computer user as it's pretty darn hard to go wrong with it.

The regular uninstaller provided by Windows kept leaving bits and pieces of uninstalled programs behind - or worse, would swipe bits and pieces of another program will it was doing the uninstall. Since Doug recommended Revo, I've installed literally dozens upon dozens of programs to test and never had a single problem uninstalling them. (Gosh, I sound like a commercial for their program :)).

For safely uninstalling programs and getting rid of all the other junk left behind by just using the windows add/remove, Revo is in my mind the best you can get, either the fully free but basic version will do in most instances, though the paid for version can be tried on a trial basis for I think one month. I have been using the free version for several years now and always use it for removing programs I have tried, but don't like, right through to fully working firewall and anti-virus programs where I felt they weren't right for me.

I agree Nev, I have safely been using Revo for approximately 3 years.
I never use the Windows Add/Remove feature any longer. Revo is one
of the best free software programs I have ever had. I did a trial of
the Pro version but there really wasn't much of a difference between
    the Free and Pro.
