Trying to help my brother in law with his new laptop. Compacq Presario CQ 57 - 339 WM notebook, Windows 7. In trying to use Windows Help and Support from start menu, the screen comes up with banner on top, Windows Help and Support, however, the field is not windows, HP help and support which will not help with Windows usage. And idea how to get Windows help and support to return? Thanks so much.

Try hitting the Start button/orb and typing "Help", and then left clicking on the question mark icon that you will see near the top of the list that opens. (See image below)

I get the same black and white HP help and support. The help and support is listed in the gray area on right side of the programs listing when you press start. It's odd, then we chose the "windows" help and support, the top banner says Windows Help and support. The area where the contents of windows help and support is replaced by the HP h & s, and deals mainly with diagnostics, maintenance, etc. My bro in law has only had his laptop for 6 months or so, is his first computer and really needs the windows help and support to learn the system. How do we return the windows help and support to the program list, it seems to have been supplanted by HP.

He's only had this first computer for 6 months or so, he can't type either. It would be a lot easier for him to be able to click on the link on the start list to find what he needs. Besides, Hp should not have taken over the link for microsoft help and support. Is there a way to get the windows help and support back or is it a big problem? He also doesn't know how to use the favorites list. Someone else set up the computer for him, I'm having a difficult time figuring out what they did and this just makes it harder for both of us.

Any one can type with one finger. He needs some serious tuition.:)
Help and support is useless if he can't type what the problem is.

If you click Start and then type help and support then right click on the resulting help and support what does it say for location under properties?

One answer may be to either update the Hp Support Assistant or to disable/stop it. To stop the service from running do this...
    • Click the Start button/orb and type Services.msc
    • In the resulting menu left click on Services.msc. (Near the top of screen)
    • Scroll down the list on the right, and click once on HP Support Assistant to highlight the entry.
    • In the left hand panel click Stop the service.
Note: You may need to reboot...Probably best to anyway.

If this cures your problem, then fine. If it doesn't then updating your HP Support Assistant to version 5.1.10.7 will probably do the trick.
Please let us know how this goes.

After you answer the other questions take a look here:

Click Start > type in ......regedit .....right click on the regedit that will show up top left of screen > Run as Administrator
This will open the registry editor.
Now click on the > to the left of the following:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer > Advanced
When you get to "Advanced" there will be no > to the left .......click on Advanced to highlight it.

Now look across to the right.

Is there anything related to "Start Menu Help" .....or "no Start Menu Help" ?

Please DO NOT make any changes in the registry.

typing anything into the search pane above start does nothing. Chose help and support from programs list, right clicked and did not get a properties box. When entering help and support into search field above start button, it just blanks out, does not do anything. regedit into search field gets nothing also. Found services, stopped HP help and support service assistant, reboot, clicked on help and support from right pane and got HP help and support. rechecked services, HP support assistant is still set at automatic, even tho I had stopped it. Services is reached thru Control Panel, system/security, administration tools. There are 4 that are HP. HP client services, software framework, support assistant,(which I stopped, and is automatic) and HPWMISVC. Thanks to all for your suggestions. we both appreciate the help.

What happens if you type regedit ..... then hit ENTER ?

    Regarding Services .....
Right click on the HP service > Properties > Under "Startup Type" use the down arrow and select "Disabled"
    Apply / OK

    See if this helps.

regedit, enter, no start menu help. several choices, admi, change, favori, init, logoff, run, scroll. Disabled HP client services, reboot, select help and support from right hand list of programs, still shows HP help and support. Windows help and support on my Vista machine is a click to choose, topic to read, one is the basics, which he needs. Again, thanks for the help.

Hi. I just had a look at my wife's HP laptop and you need to remove HP support assistant.
Have you "Revo Uninstaller free" on your computer?
If not here is a download link.
    http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html
scroll to the bottom and install free version 1.94.
Install revo and when you open look for "HP Support Assistant"
Has a big blue question mark.
Click on it and choose uninstall and follow the prompts

Have already removed HP support assistant. That does the trick. Nasty surprise however. Microsoft in it's infinite wisdom has not included Help and support in Windows 7. At least that is the message in the blank field where it used to be. Strange it would still be listed on right pane of start list. Thanks to all for your time and expertise. We both appreciate all your help.

But Windows 7 DOES offer Help and Support. If it is not available to you after removing the HP @^*+ it is due to what HP has done to the system, not a lack of what MS offers.

This is a rather bold statement but companies such as Dell, HP, etc., REALLY screw up a system. Yes, they sell them to you cheap but they are loaded to the gills with their BS software that offers very little actual user help yet makes them millions. The way that it makes them millions is that their software tracks everything that you do. They then sell this info to marketing groups to target ads to your system. Can I actually prove the last statement, no. Is it a known issue, yes.
