Ok, so I recently uninstalled Ubuntu from my pc so now I only have windows 7, in the partition manager I have my windows partition and the approx.400gbs from my former ubuntu partition. When I try to delete or create a new volume with it it says " There is not enough available space on the disk to complete this operation" so I'm just wondering how I can turn the 400 gbs back into unallocated space so I can merge it back to my c drive

More than likely you'll have to use gparted to reclaim the space if the uBuntu partition is reiserfs or extfs.

May also have an issue if Ubuntu's GRUB boot loader is still active.

The file system on the 400gig that used to hold Ubuntu would be EXT3 if the default settings were used to install Ubuntu. Windows cannot read an EXT3 format. Since Windows cannot read EXT3 you cannot just extend the C: partition to encompass the extra space. This space needs to be made unallocated first. This MIGHT take a Windows install disk or third party software.

Another issue that may arise is if the multi boot was being handled by the Ubuntu version of the boot loader called Grub. If that is the case then the inability to unallocate the space may be caused by the fact that it contains the system boot info. Something like EasyBCD may be needed, possibly the startup repair option on a Windows 7 installer may do the job.

Ok so I made it into a new partition using gparted but now I still can't delete or merge it because when I try to delete it, it says "An unexpected error has occured, check the event log" And the merge option is grayed out. So how can I merge or delete them/it

First things first here, I would back up everything you want to keep just in case something goes wrong if you haven't done so yet.

Next is to format that partition to either unallocated or NTFS. Once it has been formatted you should be able to do more with it.
I don't actually know the GParted software so can't say if formatting can be done with that tool, however EasUS partition manager, the free home version can.
You can download it from here=

make sure you download the free home version unless you want the pro version.

Thanks Nev, of course the first step in making any serious change to a system (and re-doing partitions IS a serious change) is to do a backup. If it were myself I would not just backup data I'd make a system image.
