Ok, so randomly the other day my desktop decided to take a dump on me and not connect to the internet. I have a laptop and so does my roommate and they are having no problems connecting wirelessly to our network. I've tried everything I can think of, reset the cable modem, reset my router, hell I even bought a new ethernet card because I noticed that my connection speed now says 1 Gbps instead of 100 Mbps - which tipped me off to the idea that maybe my original ethernet card couldn't handle the speed upgrade because I believe it is a 10/100 card. It connects to the network, but says it now says the network is unidentified and that there is no internet access. I even did a system restore on the whim that maybe a setting got messed up somewhere and that did nothing for me.

    Any ideas?

I am a little confused, before you changed the ethernet (lan) card was there a working wired connection? Did you try to connect directly to the modem bypassing the router?

No, the wired connection was not working. And yes I connected it directly to the modem with no change in the connection.

Have a look at this thread http://computerhelpforums.net/topic/39015-lan-adapter-gets-disconnected/page__fromsearch__1

After looking through it, pay attention to post 5 and what follows. Have you tired any of these possible solutions?

NOTE: by BCB The thread referred to by MUSEical is the one mentioned in my post above. I have simply moved this back.

I was directed to this post by BeeCeeBee from my original thread (url to this thread- BCB) for having basically the same problem. I am also not entirely sure how to manually assign values for each of these settings but I went ahead and went into cmd and this is what I have:

    Hi,

What was the make and model number of the NIC you installed?

Start > type in ......devmgmt.msc ......ENTER
Click the + next to Network Adapters.
    What is listed?

Are there any yellow exclamation marks ?

I or somebody else, will explain how to do the manual settings after you post a reply to this.

The manual for your NIC is here:
    http:/ l.startech.c.../ST1000SPEX.pdf

Although the text suggests it is not Win7 compatible this suggests it is
    http://www.microsoft...pters&os=64-bit

I don't think the drivers are installed.
According to the text from the manual you should see in Device Manager:

    “Realtek RTL8168/8111 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (Windows® 2000/XP/ Server2003)
    or
Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet

(although the 2 Realtek listed could possibly be )

Which system do you have 32 / 64 Bit ?
    You will need appropriate drivers

I suggest you remove the existing drivers from Device Manager and follow the installatiion instructions on p2 of the manual.

Can you let us know what shows in Device Manager after you have done this please ?
