I recently bought an Asus U35 JC notebook and things seemed to be working fine until a couple days ago when the thing started refusing to shut down.

It doesn't matter how many times I click -> windows -> shutdown, nothing happens and there's no error message. Restart has no effect either. Hibernate and sleep do seem to work. The hard power-off button on my notebook just puts it to sleep.

This is my first Windows 7 machine, so I am new to the OS but generally competent enough to stay out of much PC trouble. Ctrl+alt+delete doesn't do anything either (I can't bring up task manager).

I haven't installed any software that I can think of that might have started the problem.

Any ideas? I don't even know if this is a software or hardware problem.

    Thanks

Hey Swinton, just a quick note, have you checked the power options, to check what the On/Off button is set to do?

Also, try ctrl + shift + esc, this is a second shortcut for the task manager.

Thirdly, have you checked that all your drivers are up to date?

Finally, When was the last time your system did a Windows update? Was it recently?

If you need any more help on finding these things out, just ask :)

    Hi Swinton.
Also Make sure in the power management Tab that "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save Power Box" is checked.

Open Network and Sharing Center (click the Start button, type Network and Sharing in the Start Search box, and press Enter).

Click the Change adapter settings link in the upper left of the navigation pane.

Right click the network connection you want to enable/disable power management support on and click Properties.

    Click Configure.

On the Power Management tab, check the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box.

Hi Swinton and welcome to CHF.

If after following the instructions listed above you are still having the same issue try a Clean Boot.

I would start with a Clean Boot to eliminate any software or driver conflicts.
To perform a clean boot, Click on Start > Run > Type msconfig in the run box.
Hit the Enter key or Click OK.

In the System Configuration Window, Select the General tab, click Selective Startup
and then click to clear the Load startup items check box.
(The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)

Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.
Click Apply and OK. Restart your computer.

Are you still experiencing the issue on a Clean Boot?

Thanks for the welcome and all the responses. You all are great!

I followed DSTM's advice and found the box already checked under power management.

So I went and changed my power button to shutdown rather than sleep. Pressing it had no effect so I held it for a few seconds which activated some sort of killswitch (oops!). I powered back on and started windows normally. Shutdown seems to work fine now.
