I used to be able to click, drag, drop a website icon in front of the https: to make a shortcut. After running a Full Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials I can no longer seem to do this. Does anyone know why and what I can do to get this feature back?
I actually just tried it with this site and no others so it may be blocking it somehow. Will try it with other sites to see.

Does not work on the sites I tried but these sites have padlock icon on them.

Tried to set it not to block ie, to Standard, but still the padlock is there. How do I stop the blocking and restore ability to drag & drop URL icon to make shortcut as I USED to do????

    See example for CHF

The Security Essentials should have nothing to do with draging URLs onto your desktop to create a shortcut. Are you dragging the URL onto your desktop? If not, then where are you trying to drag them to?

I used to click-hold-drag the "i" icon (show site information) to the desktop and release it and it made a shortcut. Now it shows a circle with a line through it if I try that. and no shortcut. I searched and found it to be a recent common occurrence as in the link above. I could also drage to a folder or an email. Not anymore though, perhaps due t some new security protection. Just wanted to be sue I was not causing it.

The padlock simply means that the site uses https rather than http.

Why drag to your desktop when all you have to do is save as a bookmark? If you want to get to the site quicker. put it in the Bookmark Toolbar.

Note the 8th icon over is this site. I have FF Quantum ESR 60.8 with a walnut theme that's why it appears as wood grain.

The fewer icons on the desktop, the faster your desktop loads. I try and keep as few icons on the desktop as possible for quick loading time.

I just tried with the same browser on my Windows 7 machine. I am able to drag URLs onto the desktop.

Using your mouse, left click your mouse and hold it down on either the pad lock or i (with the circle icon) to the left of the URL. Then drag your mouse to your desktop. Then let go of the left click button.

Tony: I just tried this with a Left click AND a Right click. Used to make a shortcut. Now it turns into a circle with a Left to Right 45 degree angle down and to right. Something has changed and I do not think it is my doing. Have to find a new way. I tried it with this website which has the i in a circle AND the padlock. Have not changed any of my settings that I know of. Puzzled.

Once I have put say THIS website on the Bookmarks toolbar I guess it appears at top of page under the URL box. Is this correct? It is what I see on my machine. To answer why I drag&drop is that it is easy and I found I could do it. Now I CANNOT no matter what I try.

And as to BOOKMARKS, I made a few and they are there. Tried a new one and when I clicked DONE the bookmark did not appear. Now cannot seem to make one. Is there a limit to only 3 or some other reason no longer works?

If there's a limit to the number of bookmarks, it's pretty big. I can't find anyone that says there's a limit. You're doing something wrong.

Finally learned how to make a bookmark. Made 4 after deleting the 3 that were there. Guess it was so easy at first I did not realize how I did it.
I also was going to start a post called Amazon Shopping Cart before finding the delete button to empty the cart. Then did not know how to cancel the post.

I never found a way to fix this. But I did find that I am able to drag & drop a website URL from a FOLDER to desktop; just not from webpage URL to desktop. I also tried the bookmarks but they got too cumbersome.

Bookmarks are better than having tons of icons on the desktop. The more icons on the desktop, the longer it takes to load. I've always encouraged my husband to put icons into folders on his desktop so fewer things have to load.

You can create folders and sort them by name with in Bookmarks.

Although I have also been using bookmarks I prefer to be able to drag and drop URL to desktop to create a shortcut, or to a folder. I have searched for this and many have this problem suddenly occurring. Without any way of fixing it. I tried Google search, DuckDuckGo search, IE , and some of the suggetions I read. If anyone knows how to fix this problem I would like to try it. I do not know if it is Windows, the browser, some settingthat has been changed or what. Can get nowhere and I miss being abole to create shortcuts by drag&drop even though I can make Bookmarks which clutter up my page at top.

Bookmarks don't clutter up the top page. Unless you choose to put everything in the Bookmarks Toolbar.

I probably have over 300 bookmarks. I wouldn't want 300 shortcuts on my desktop! You have to click bookmarks to see the folders I have them in. Unfortunately, when I open then click for a screenshot, my bookmarks menu closes. I might be able to take a picture with my phone to show you.

Here's the bookmarks expanded. You see I have sorted and unsorted. I have bookmarks at the end that are temporary. Ones I either need to sort or I want to go back for another look then I'll remove them.
    expanded_bookmarks.jpg

Sorted you can see all my folders.
    sorted.jpg
Then each folder is sorted has bookmarks in it. Here is android expanded.

    Unsorted expanded.

It is like a 2 drawer file cabinet and each drawer has folders in it.

Maybe I was doing it all wrong. I was putting them in the Bookmarks Toolbar sincee it was new to me. This was confusing and did not seem very workable. I started making shortcuts because it was an easy way to save then go back to it later. Then it quit working. Must check further into the Bookmarks thing. Thanks for the info.
