Hi me and a mate recently built a computer for myself and i have had a few problems
First problem i would just be browsing the net or playing bf3 for about 40min and it will just turn off and wont boot up again i would have to switch it off at the back then switch it back on but after i would do that it would start up then shut down and it just keeps doing that. eventually it would boot up again but it would come up with overclocking failed ? its not even overclocked so i have no idea what is going on i thought maybe it was a heat problem untill i just left it sitting nothing open and it going into like a sleep mode my pc is on but nothing on my screen i tried moving the mouse to get the screen back on but nothing worked once again i would have to turn it off at the back. i thought maybe there was a sleep setting or hybination setting i had missed i change all the power setting to high performance and never turn off but it just keeps doing it i cant work it out! does anyone have any ideas?? i would appriciate any support

Hi deanio2. Welcome to Computer Help Forums.
Is this an overclocking attempt gone wrong?. It may not be overclocked now. We need to know this.
Looks to me your Bios is screwed up. If you have been playing around in the Bios you may have overvolted your Ram.
    Is this 32 or 64bit?
I suggest you remove all ram and try with 1 stick in another slot. If it is 32bit then you have a lot of wasted Ram.
Remove the Bios battery, wait for a couple of minutes and replace the battery again, to set Bios to default, or use the jumpers on the Motherboard.
Set the monitor not to turn off for a long period also.
    Try this and get back.

Hi. You did not answer my question if you did make alterations in the bios. Attempt to Overclock.
You say your Ram works in all slots?
This could also be a hardware conflict issue.
Reinstall Motherboard chipset drivers and install all Microsoft and Windows updates.
What happens if you try to boot into Safe Mode? Tap F8 repeatedly on boot.
All Ram identical in specs and speed?
You tried one stick of Ram only in each slot and tried to boot?
Help may be slow as it's New Years Day.

Hi i just attempted to start it in safe mode and it just kept shutting down and restarting before it could even get to the log in screen. it has done this a few times before.
also i forgot to mention i took it back to my friends house and he did a pcmark 7 test and it ran for 2 and a half hours fine no problems at all. i thought maybe my power board was faulty as it was very old so i went a bought a new one and it ran for and hour when i got back to my house and it all started again

Hi, You say that you built it yourself - was this with all new components ?

Your problem sounds as if it could be a failing PSU.
Do you have one that you can swap it with to test?

I have a link I can let you have if you want to use a voltmeter to test it.

Can you swap it for a known good one - it doesn't have to be 850W ?

yea i will ask a friend if they have one i can test.
its strange though because it was working at my friends house i had no problems.
it seems to only stay on for half an hour then keeps trying to restart itself.
Appreciate the help by the way :)

I have seen this behaviour with PSUs before.
If you can swap it at least we will know for sure if that is the problem or not.

If your friend has the same build it would be interesting to see if your PSU gave his system the same problems.

This I can't explain .....................unless you have a power problem with a wall socket.
Have you tried it in a completely different socket?

Not sure how your house is wired - I have 2 completely different circuits upstairs / downstairs.
Try it in a different socket and see if this helps.

    Link to testing a PSU:

    http://kenspchelp.co...ic.php?f=9&t=10

It could be that the voltage on one of the rails drops erratically causing your restart problem.
When you test it - if it is functioning "normally" you will get voltage readings that then appear "normal".

Also - this is not a test under load.

The best test is to swap it.

I am also a little concerned when you say the computer works OK at your friends place, but gives problems at your own. My concern is there a correct earth available, is there a possible loose connection at the mains incoming or elsewhere in the house wiring, all things that requires a competent electrician to check, but worth bearing in mind if a different power supply fails to cure it. Is it the only computer in the house, if not how well does any other computer run?

Hi Nev If the home didn't have a proper grounding circuit then the member would be getting static zaps off the tower and most appliances in the home when metal is touched.
Quite possible a current drop as KenB has suggested compared to his friends house and this could affect a weak or failing PSU.[IMG]

Also in safe mode advanced boot options I would disable "Auto restart on system failure"
This should give you a BSOD with a message and Hex code.
