    Okay so I have an older system I just put together (big upgrade from my previous single core sempron) and I ran XP until my 2GB stick of ram came in the mail today. Anyways, I am running windows 7 64bit. Here is the problem. When I boot, Windows refuses to boot with Core Multiplexing Technology on. Then I only have a dual core. I tried updating my bios too. Please help!

    Is this now a dual boot situation or is 7 your only OS?

    Have you looked in msconfig under the boot tab (advnced) and made sure that it show 2 processors? Activating the 2nd core in the bios may not always mean that it is recognized by Windows 7.

    There is no point in looking for issues with your OS or hardware until we are sure that windows recognizes all the cores. You can try booting into safemode and going to msconfig or, if necessary disable them go to msconfig set the processors to 4 and make sure you ok your way out and then shut down. The change will not take place until you reboot anyway. Then re enable them in the bios and reboot. If that does not work we have at least ruled out the need to force Windows 7 to recognize all the cores.

    You are really missing my point. If that is what you have to do then do it. Get to msconfig and set the processors to 4 and then after you have saved your settings do a normal shut down. Then go back and enable all the cores in the bios and only after that reboot.

    If you can boot into safemode without disabling the cores in the bios then you can forget that part. :)

    I would unlock one core at a time. You may find it will boot OK on 3 cores.
    Try that.

    How much Ram have you in total?

    Microsoft states that computers running 64-bit Windows 7 have a minimum of 2 GB of memory. Systems need more than the minimum requirements of RAM to function well. A computer with a 64-bit dual core processor and a 64-bit operating system should have at least 4 GB of RAM.

    Ok so the basics I see are;

    You have an Intel Q6600 (Quad Core) according to your profile.
    You can't turn the PC on with core multiplexing technology (CMT from now on) enabled/on.

    This CMT is an early form of what is hyperthreading today, CMT effectively splits the quad core into two dual cores hence you mention seeing two cores, 5 years ago applications had more support for dual core then quad so it was used to improve performance of applications.

    This is where things get confusing, you are mentioning you can't boot with CMT enabled/on but you are only seeing dual core when booted up.

    How is this possible when CMT isn't enabled?
    So basically you should be seeing 4 cores by my thoughts?

    Do correct if I am seeing this wrong, but it just doesn't add up to me.

    I cannot help but wonder if there isn't a bios flash that fixes this issue. Are there any newer bios available for your motherboard and how about telling us your hardware as well.
