I have the Free version of Avira Virus software running, and from somewhere! ...as I have never seen it before! another virus program called Windows defender is also running! and I know you should not be running 2 virus programs at the same time! but I'm wondering if one of them is better then the other, before I shut one of them off!

    Hi John,

This comes pre-installed on the Windows Operating system.
Earlier versions of Windows Defender were not very good.
Normally when an Anti Virus is installed, then Windows Defender will be automatically disabled.
Although this isn't always the case.

WD isn't actually an AntiVirus, it's an AntiMalware program..... but this has been known to conflict with an AntiVirus. ( the version of WD on Vista and Win7 systems was never the best)

    To disable Windows Defender..........
    • Click Start >> Control Panel >> Windows Defender or launch from the system tray icon.
    • Click on Tools & Settings >> Options.
    • Under Real-time protection options, uncheck the "Real-time protection" check box.
    • Click Save.
    • Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Security >> Windows Defender, at the bottom of the Window Defenders page uncheck under Administrator Options "use Windows Defender" and then Save.

Thanks Starbuck ..as I said in my post, this Defender program just appeared in the tray one day as an Alert of no protection! Normally I am running Avira so I could not figure out what exactly was going on! ...Anyway I disabled it as per your instructions, Thanks again for your help! ...John

The reason you get the notification of no protection is because Win Defender is like MSSE...... if a manual scan hasn't been run for awhile it does throw up this message.

    Glad you disabled it ok.
