AVG (free version) appears to have been the cause of my super slow computer, on each dual boot Vista OS.
Once it was removed properly, things got back to speedy.

Props to Bill for spotting a comment here, in regard to this issue, and alerting me.

    Hi,

I am not disputing your suggestion at all - but in AVG's defence I used it for years with no problems.
The reason I dropped it was that Starbuck pointed me in the direction of an article that made comparison between a number of AVs.
Significantly AVG did not perform well.
I am now using MS Essentials.
I have not noticed a difference in the speed of my system so I can only assume that AVG was not causing it to run slowly.
For reference - this was on a Vista 32 bit machine.

Mine is 32 bit Vista, as well.

Have been a very loyal user of AVG for many years.

I am delighted to have my two OS's (dual boot) back to full speed, whatever the underlying cause.
Am reporting my experience for reference only, in case someone else is having the same situation and wishes to try my solution.

I am not a programmer, merely a consumer of bytes and bits.
In other words, this is not a scientific result, and I certainly cannot defend, nor do I wish to defend my results.

Please don't shoot the messenger. :snckr:

Not sure what you mean!!! are you still experiencing problems with your PC's speed?

or are you referring to your reply to KenB's post?

Please could you clarify which was the mistaken entry, things like this keep me awake pondering its meaning and relevance to the meaning of life, which results in me loosing beauty sleep, which at my age I need all I can get :snckr:

    Machine is working great.

I hit a wrong key and created an extra post that was not needed.

    I wouldn't dream of it :)
Your post may well point some members towards a solution.

Out of interest - which AV did you opt for as a replacement?

The free Avast was my choice, also recommended by Bill.
The program is refreshing to use and I really like it.

I had the same issue with my lenovo running XP Pro. But some additional information: AVG Free executed an "update" for the definitions and the Program itself. Following the upgrade I did a full scan that would not finish. Prior to the update I had used AVG Free for years with only one prior problem, also following an Update several years ago. For a while I simply ignored it, but I then experienced several lock ups with the system and/or several of my fav. apps that have been trouble free for a long time. Following a comment I found here, I removed AVG, first uninstalling and then using the AVG supplied removal tool. Following a registry clean and a reboot, the problems disappeared. I switched to Avast which seems fine. On my Win 7 machine I use MS Essentials but MSE and XP don't get along, at all.

    New developments at hand.

I stopped Malwarebytes from loading on boot. Dual anti-virus programs might have been fighting.

USB jumpdrive used for ReadyBoost was removed for another use. When I put it back in, I got the slow down action immediately.

Flash drive has limited cycles, so it might be hitting the wall. Will report findings.

A gradually failing HDD was to blame for the entire fiasco.
It finally showed its true colors and died the other day.

Since it was not AVG causing the mess, I went back to it.
Avast was getting on my nerves.

Even made the upgrade to the paid AVG version for the first time.
It was offered for free using Trial Pay when I bought something I was going to buy anyway.

Just wanted to clear the air about AVG and the other things I blamed the slow-down on.

That slowly failing HDD was certainly a new one on me!

Am using Avast again on a Windows 2000 Pro SP4 back-up machine.
The former issue I had with Avast was due to the failing HDD, and not Avast, as it appears retrospect.
Just wanted to clear the air about Avast.

I am glad of that outcome, as I have come to like Avast very much.

Part of the problem with Hard Drive issues is that unless it is giving out overt signs ( clicking or scraping sounds) or you are getting a BSOD HDD error code, they are hard to spot particularly in this forum environment.

    I guess so! B)

    Well, now I am "aware".
Or "experienced", as Jimmy Hendrix asked.

    Completely different experiences, of course.

One experience of a failing HDD over 11 years and dozens of hard drives is nothing to write home about. The issue won't go viral on YouTube, that's for sure.

Some recent tests by various organisations of almost all available free and paid for anti-virus have shown that AVG is one of the best, but closely following it is Avast for for stopping most virus infections, however do be aware there are many other types of malware about now that can easily get past just an ordinary anti-virus program. It is wise to install at least one of the well known general anti-spyware programs such as Malwarebytes, Superantispyware or one of the others, though those two come highly rated.

Would that be the paid version?

Because I have a big problem with AVG Free, In that it doesn't seem to prevent your system becoming infected but just tells you it has, and that you need to upgrade to the paid version to remove it !!!!!!!
