What AV freeware would you recommend ? Any suggestions would be
    appreciated.

    Avira's AntiVir Personal.

BUT - what /else/ will you be doing about your system's security?

What will you do about /all/ other manner of malware? Virus
protection is only scratching the surface.

Avira, as PW said, or Avast, perhaps a little bit more user-friendly
have free editions and are good.

We also have Spybot and Ad-aware and we run microsoft's Malicious software
removal tool once a month. Our Norton 360 will expire in two weeks and we
were not impressed with it and decided to replace it with a freeware AV.
    Thanks for your reply.

    Right now I am running AntiVir(free version),MBAM(paid version)and
IObit360(free version). They all seem to play nice together. My system is
a very old w2k compaq laptop(PII/233mz/160mb) and there is not much drag
using the above 3 compared to the drag avast pro (by itself) put on it.

Of Spybot a hear people say: it was good but is not actually one of
the best anymore. They praise MalwareBytes' AntiMalware [mbam]and
    SuperAntiSpyware [SAS]...

Looking at the whois info for nortonoutreach.com leads me to believe
that it's not affiliated with Symantec in any way.

    Very strange.

    Hi Virus Guy,

I am indeed employed by Symantec to conduct outreach for new products and programs, and yes we did purchase nortonoutreach.com through Go Daddy. Norton Outreach is a new initiative to help spread the word about safe computing practices and Norton's security tools.

If you have any questions about our 2010 products, please let me know.

Interrupting the thread with an OT item (for which I apologise).

Andrew, is it possible/feasible for you/your colleagues to check the
    programmes on this web site
    and advise if they
are genuine 'fixes' and/or if they could do harm if folk on newsgroups
    decide to try them?

You may email me if preferred.

    TIA

    Hello Andrew:

I wondered why the nortonoutreach.com IP address didn't find its way
directly to a Symantec server. Perhaps Norton Outreach is a
contracted or completely separate political entity. We have been
known to be naturally suspicious of newcomers making claims here.

Unfortunately Norton antimalware products have not ranked well with
many professionals in these malware newsgroups. Some MS-MVPs would
even have users "Flatten and Rebuild" rather than try and deal with a
trouble traced to, or involving, /any/ Norton 360. Our anecdotal
evidence shows not even the Norton Removal Tool will entirely cleanse
a damaged system of Norton 360. Pity.

If that weren't bad enough, you've made the unfortunate mistake of
making a reference to a recommendation in PC Magazine. That, is the
kiss of death for many here.

When Norton (not Symantec) products have earned good marks in Virus
Bulletin and AV-Comparatives and perhaps others, then it will be time
to take a serious look at Norton antimalware products again. Please
believe me when I write that we collectively /do/ hope for that day.

Presently we have an excellent choice of antimalware products that are
free. Norton has its work cut out for them.

    Respectfully,
