Hi all, I am a new member and I am hoping somebody can offer some help.
I have just built an Intel NUC5PPYH kit and installed Windows 7.
Everything works fine except there is no sound when I connect the pc to my tv via HDMI. Video is perfect but no sound. The pc recognises the tv as a generic pnp monitor only, whereas if I connect another pc to the same tv it shows up as LG tv and even shows the model number.
Under sound devices there is listed a digital audio (HDMI) device, but it is shown as "not plugged in". I have tried using different cables and different HDMI ports but the result is the same.
I have downloaded updated drivers for everything I can find but this hasn't helped.
The problem must lie with the pc as my other pc does not have this problem with the same tv.
I thought I may have to set something in bios, but when I go into bios it is unlike the bios on any other pc I have had and I cannot find anything that nedds to be set.

I am hoping somebody out there has experience with the NUC5PPHY.

you need to go to the small speaker icon at the bottom right corner of your pc right click on it and select playback device and select the tv as the default and wala you have audio

Thanks for the suggestions, but it is not possible to set the HDMI as default while it is listed as not plugged in, as the set default button is "dead".

Is your Bios set on Default settings?

Yes, on default settings. The bios in this pc is different to anything I have seen before. There is a shortcut to restore default settings, but as far as setting anythig else goes I am struggling to find how to get into any settings to check.
For example when I go to devices in bios I see Audio with a ticked box and all I am able to do is un-tick this (which doesn't do anything for my problem. There doesn't seem to be any way to change any settings related to audio.
I am on the point of giving up and taking it to an expert who will know a lot more than me!

Sounds (oh, no pun intended) could it maybe be a driver issue... Whether internal or external audio, redo the driver; either for the M/B or the sound card. You already check wiring & connectors?

Hi Neil, welcome. Have you looked in Device Manager to see if Audio Devices have red or yellow marks next to them?

Hi Drew, Yes I'm sure it has something to do with drivers. According to the Intel website the pc should come with Intel HD graphics integrated, but under display adapters in Device Manager it shows only "standard vga adapter".
Intel troubleshooting advises that if this is the case, then to uninstall the graphics drivers and then download their latest HD graphics drivers. I have done this but then I can't install the new drivers and get a message saying the computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements for these. A bit strange since I am downloading drivers speciically for this setup.
Anyway, this has been driving me mad, so I will have one last try this morning and if I still can't fix it it is going to a computer repair shop!
Incidentally, I know it can put out sound, as I hooked it up to the speakers from my other pc, set speakers to default in playback, and away it went.

Hi Dougie, I tried that but just got told that the latest drivers are already installed, and it still just showed the display adapter as standard vga.

I am giving up now (reluctantly) and taking it to a repair shop this morning.
When I find out what the problem was I will post it in case anyone else has the smae thing.

look if you say that the audio works when you plug something else it works and when you plug in your hdmi it wont work so the hdmi as its own video and audio the is transferred by the video device but the one picking it up is the audio in your integrated audio card so with that said something its not making sense i like to know a bit more aboute your computer please becouse sometime the audio from the hdmi can conflict with the audio from the audio card / on-board regardless so like i said if you can provide more info like the pc type if its a separate video card and what operating system your running stuff like that it would help us thanks

The pc is an Intel NUN5PPYH basic kit with added memory card (8g) and crucial MX200 250G solid state drive. As far as I can determine the graphics card is supposed to be Intel HD Graphics integrated.
    Operating system is Windows 7.
That's about all I can tell you (I'm not very experienced with computers).

Where are the drivers come form? Installing the incorrect driver can cause your audio not to work properly.

You may want to check Intel's site to see if there is a compatibility issue.

Here is a link to the Intel site that may help.

The other possibility is a failed HDMI cable. A long shot but I have had one fail in my Home Theater system. The audio portion simply stopped working.

Thanks Rustys, the drivers I downloaded were from the Intel site.
I gave up and put the pc into a repair shop yesterday, and I hope to get it back this morning. If they can tell me what the problem was I will let you know.
