I updated my BIOS a few months ago because my BIOS was from 2007 and now my audio doesn't work. Some times when I first turn on the computer the audio works for a few minutes and then it goes away. This started happening right after the BIOS update, I tried installing the old BIOS and no luck. Also, when I shutdown/restart the computer it gets stuck on a black screen so I have to press and hold the power button to get it to work. I don't care much about the black screen but I really need to fix the audio. I read something about the audio device being disabled and something about clearing the CMOS? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu installed on my computer and I get the same problem on both so it cant be a driver issue. My laptop is a HP Pavilion dv6629us.

I am not sure what the effect will be but the simplest way to reset the bios is to remove the CMOS battery (Round silver large watch type batter) leave it out for a very short time. A minute will do just fine and then replace it.

I removed the bios battery and waited longer than a minute then put it back in and still nothing. The battery was next to the wireless device. I'm guessing that's the battery unless the laptop has more than one battery.

Take a look in the BIOS to see if Audio has been disabled there.

    Is "Integrated Peripherals" there?

Assuming you are using on-board sound?

May I just ask if anyone has checked in the device manager, to see if there are any reported issues with drivers? I know the member states that the issue happens in two different OS's but is it not possible that if the Bios update was incompatible with one driver in one OS that this would also be an issue with the second OS driver, and if so would it not also be possible that the Bios update could corrupt both?

I don't want to jump in and confuse things as making sure things are enabled and working in the Bios is a logical starting place, but just thought it might be worth mentioning for later if all is OK with the Bios :)

Drivers or BIOS may be the issue, as audio drivers should actually be independent of, and work with any operating system.
What is confusing is that sometimes sound works briefly at start up, what sounds are heard, and roughly for how long does it work before going off? Can you tell us please.
