Maybe I missed something. Please restate your question.

If the question was which adapter to choose, they will both work. I prefer the dock. It’s up to you.

I am sorry-- but I sent you this link---ONLY because it encloses the hard drive completely? Not sure if that matters--- and if it is something you recommend- which would be the best??

can i also try something like this-- for neatness etc etc- and which one would be correct--- I searched on amazon - and found this type??

I’d read the feedback for each of the adapters before purchasing.

I appreciate that- BUT after all the help you have given me - I would rather take your word for it!--and I did read the amazon reviews and the docking station got good writeups- and like you said it will keep the hard drive neat and organized with that slot to store it in.

Hey again-- I am a little confused now-- we have been replying to each other for quite some time and you have been very helpful. Now you kind of made a u-turn?? My only question I guess at this point is will either of these WORK for MY situation- since the first product I bought does not due to the voltage etc---- so I need to try one of these products you mentioned. and the docking station you recommend over the other cable and adapter is due to having te drive actually be put inside somewhere organized so to speak. So again my question is - this is the KIND of product I need- correct? As for unreliability- that can happen with any product- - so I must move forward from here and give one of those products a try?

All of the ones we mentioned will work. Note - they all say they will work with 3.5 inch drives and they all come with an external power supply.

The one you originally purchased didn't work because it said 2.5 inch drives only and it didn't come with an external power supply.

You can use any unit, adapter or docking station, if it has it's own power supply.

    https://www.amazon.com/USB-2-0-Adapter-Supports-5-25-Inch/dp/B00LP6286C

You have to read in the description 2 things: with power supply and supports 3.5" drives. If it doesn't say that, then it won't work for your purposes.

Note the descriptions: all mention power and 3.5" drives

I understand - thanks for the clarification-- and like u and I mentioned- I will shoot for the docking station- for price as well as the organization

Just one thing-- how could I have known that my old drive was NOT 3.5" ?? :(-- where does it show on the drive

I also received a reply from another site - and here was his reply???

"It looks (I'm not certain) like the date on hdd is 2009. If its a 10 yr old 'green' wd hdd, I would transfer all data to another hdd. I have had bad luck with the 'green' ones of that age."
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure if he is right or not- BUT I will still give this correct item a shot- what do you think of his reply???

I have one of those old Western Digital 'Green' drives. I never liked it because it would shut down. That's what makes it green. Like those new cars that shut down when sitting at a traffic light. I had always, and still do, use it only as an external device for backing up other machines. Mine is dated Nov 2010. If you were using that drive to run your Windows, I agree it may not be reliable due to its age and use factor.

Laptop drives are 2.5 inch; desktop drives are 3.5 inch. The measurement is the diameter of the platters inside the drive. The 3.5 inch drives need the additional 12v to turn the larger platters.

Like I said-- my old HP pavilion believe it or not lasted from 2008 till a month ago-- it really did not die--- just that whenever we had a power outage or loss of power my computer would shut down and have a difficult time turning back on-- HP said it might have been the power supply?? But other than that- it did everything i ever wanted from a computer and I was even running windows VISTA- and my computer NEVER crashed!!!- so I will try and use this hard drive ONLY as additional space which i doubt I will ever need- but its better than throwing it away-- and for only $13 I might as well buy that docking station and give it a whirl.

I like the way you think. Just remember to back up your files. All drives will die. Some sooner than others. Also have a few backups and don't have your backup drive connected when not backing up. If you get hit with ransomware, it'll encrypt your files and any files on connected drives.

believe it or not- my new computer is also an HP-- very reliable- it has a HDD drive AND an SSD drive-- and I have also attached to it my external 1 TB HD that was attached to my old computer- so all the backups were sent to the external HD for years- with zero problems--- so all I really want out of the old hard drive from my old machine is the extra space(do i really need it-- NO)- but why not as i said--- I may actually just view it once connected and remove what I need from it and then clean it off completely for the space as mentioned

Thanks for the good advice. I've never thought about that issue and have always kept my backup drives connected. I'll have to change that habit.
