Thanks Match for this thread. We refer to it as Veteran's day over here but the thoughts and sentiments are the same.

Early this year a passing went mostly unnoticed. On January 2, 2011 Maj. Richard (Dick) Winters passed away. At wars end he was 2nd Battalion Commander of the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne. However he was best known as the Company Commander of Company "E" of that same Regiment (known as "Easy Company or EZ Company).

Major Winters parachuted into Normandy on June 5, 1944 as a platoon leader and was Company Commander by D Day's end. EZ Company fought in France, Belgium Holland and Germany and most notably at the Battle of the Bulge.

He was nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor but denied that deserved award due to a quota system per division but was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross instead. There is presently a move in Congress to right that wrong.

Dick Winters will always be known to us as the leader of EZ Company and better known to us all as the "Band of Brothers." Rest in Peace Sir and thank you and all who have ever served.

My sentiments too are the same. My father served in Italy, being one of the first there after Italy fell, then was involved with the push into Germany near the end of the war. He was one of the lucky ones who came home, far too many did not.
