    I Have a program called "Sumo Updates Monitor". It stated there are updates for the following;

    1. ESET Main GUI (64 bits) (Major Update)
    2. ESET MSI Launcher (64 bits) (Major Update)
    3. Intel Control Center (Minor Update)
    4. USB 3.0 Device Driver (Minor Update)

Should i download any of the above?

Personally, I would never use any such software that auto-updates drivers....as they tend to update/install old drivers or the wrong drivers. It's always best to let the software itself use it's built in updater and update directly. It's much safer this way....albeit a PITA but much much safer.

Just to add to what Bassfisher6522 is saying.

Whilst many 3rd party download sites provide correct and reliable drivers, free of malware, there are just as many sites where the incorrect driver is provided, or the driver has been significantly tampered with. There are many, many documented cases where malware (trojans, virus, rootkits) has been cloaked to masquerade as a legitimate driver. Needless to say, the negative effect on the system once this "driver" has been installed is severe.

1 through 3 are good, assuming you have ESET anti-virus software. For #4 I would take the 'if in ain't broke, don't fix it,' approach.

NOTE: I use ESET NOD32 Anti Virus and all updates come from them via GUI.

Having said that, you don't specify WHERE these updates are coming from (Win Update or some other tool).

I would like to add that the "Sumo Updates Notifier" that i use will 'not' automatically download any program. I only use it as an update notifier & i choose what i feel needs to be updated from the manufacturer's site.. I also never update any of my drivers since all my default drivers are working fine.

Exactly N3 and all of you "if it aint broke don't fix" it reigns for me as well and I add something to that. If it is broke and the specified updates says it will fix the
problem, then I download and install it.
N3 are you using or have you used Eset Online Scanner as those updates may be for that program.
Personally I never use or recommend update notifiers and I think the one most people like here is Secunia N3 and many swear by it.
Choice here is personal I believe!

    1. I was under the impression that the "Eset Online Scanner" is only used as a malware detector?
    2. I was using "FileHippo App Manager" as my notifier but it stopped working for me.
    3. I have used "Secunia PSI" in the past but it had intermittent notification problems. Possibly the problem was resolved.
    4. When i use a notifier I will go to the manufacturer's home page to download an update as opposed to downloading it from the notifier's site.

I don't know of any downloads from Nod32 that are not in the program N3 so I was guessing that is what you were seeing. I never saw any for the online scanner either
unless you are updating it to use it but maybe you ok'd something with it since you do use it?. I don't know anything about File Hippo App Manager but would never use it if I did. I tried Secunia a while back because many were using it on CHF but finally uninstalled it because I really don't believe in updating drivers unless there is an issue and am perfectly capable of downloading whatever I would need as are you without them. I was just suggesting that over this Sumo updater you are talking about but the more I think about it my recommendation would be to use nothing. And yes going to mfgr site is the preferred way to do it.

Rich.....I already download Secunia PSI earlier today. Presently no problems with it. One interesting note....Both Sumo & PSI found 'needed' updates the other did not.

I tried it myself and let me tell you this is far from perfect. I have an old version of Adobe Acrobat for which this offered a newer version of Adobe Reader? Really?
VLC player updated (which I can do any day of the week find a new version of that one which is hardly a security issue. It also said I need an upgrade for ACD Photo Editor.
That's interesting I don't have any such program installed. Then Microsoft XML core except I have the newest one on here. The funniest one is it says I have the newest version of Webshots Desktop but I don't it is a really old version so all-in-all I don't think I would be using this, in fact I am uninstalling it as I really don't believe in the whole idea N3..

Wow I'm surprised of this.... I know you restarted it after you install the software. I"ll pull this one out of my canned. Last time I used it was eight months ago all was fine. But I seen excellent programs can go south with in months.

Well you know I really have issues with upgrade programs Kenny and I used it a few years ago based on forum recommendation but can't remember why I stopped.
I think it is just an update thing where years ago we used to jump all over updates and then software in general improved to the point where it really wasn't as necessary anymore. Then usher in the era where audio drivers killed sound and video drivers crippled bootup and we all became a lot more careful. We know we have to update Java and Adobe Flash Player and Reader
for safety sake as well as efficiency but the rest of this I really just take my time on. I forgot to mention with the Adobe Acrobat suggested update I already had the newest Adobe Reader DC anyway so that was really silly.

Secunia PSI has Kim Komando's endorsement.
I have the latest Secunia PSI. I find no issues with it. They make updates available, it is not forcing anything down anyone's throat. If your not having any issues I leave good enough alone. What I have found so far Secunia PSI is one of the better ones.
I always make a restore point before I download anything. Good habit to get into.

Amen I usually make an image file before doing much of anything new. Whenever I fail to do that my system usually becomes "toast".
