Alt/Ctrl/Del > Explorer AND iexplore on short list

If the computer starts acting a bit funny and/or slow while
browsing/surfing I'll check the Alt/Ctrl/Del list and the Add/Remove list
looking for anything new. Quite often but not always both Explorer AND
Iexplore are on the Alt/Ctrl/Del list and the comp will be better behaved if
I 'End Task' for Iexplore. (If its there I always need to 'End Task' twice
    to kill it.)

Have been doing this for quite a while now but don't think (don't remember?)
both being on the list in the past.
What's the differecce between the two?
Could it also be part of ocassional 'IE has encountered a problem and...'
or 'performed an illegal operation and...' issues?

Win 98 SE. PentII, 400 Mhz, 256 RAM.
    IE 6, Flash 9, OE.
AVG 7 always on every day, SpyBot S&D and Spyware Blaster updated and run
    at least weekly.
History, cookies, files/offline files cleared almost daily.

  2. Explorer includes some desktop components and local browsing such as folder
widows - it is running all the time. Internet Explorer (IExplore) is your
web browser - if you are viewing pages on the internet (or have recently
done so) then IExplore will also be running. If IE hangs, then that can
affect the performance of the whole machine. Generally, killing the IExplore
process will not cause a problem - it can simply be re-started.

    Along with Jeff's explanations:

IF you haven't used IExplorer [IE] then it should not appear unless you have
opened a CHM, htm, or similar locally and it is the default viewer.

Should you find it running, you may be infected. A common hack is to open
IE in a hidden [not shown] state.
The ICON or tray item never appears, nor is there any indication unless you
have done a check similar to yours.

Try blocking IE in your firewall with Notification when it tries to run or
contact the Internet. Should it appear, search for similar issues on Google,
or post here with more information.

Waiting for this thing to act up again and get a 'print screen' image of the
    Alt/Ctrl/Del list that puzzles me.
Have put a few error messages/screen images on a Word document. Attach the
document or can I paste the screen images into one of these OE messages?
If I'm on line I'll see 'Explorer' and 'Whatever web page - Microsoft
Internet Explorer' on the list but not just 'Iexplore' in the list unless
    the comp is acting up
Hoping/expecting to catch that screen shot soon.

Do NOT attach anything to a message posted here. Post a *plain text* format
of whatever you wish to post.

You haven't stated whether you are using IE or not. Please advise.

IExplore.exe is Internet Explorer EXCEPT when it is associated with a
    virus/hack

IExplore.exe/Internet Explorer is located in Program Files. If IExplore.exe
shows up anywhere else, such as the system or Windows directory [except in
Applog] is an indication you may have the virus/hack.

Do a file search of your disk(s) for iexplore.exe and .com. Note the
location(s). Post the results INCLUDING your supposed installed version AND
the file size found for comparison. Hopefully you already have ALL
extensions shown rather than hidden, if not make those changes to your
    folder/files.

This will not necessarily ensure you have a clean system [a little 3k file
can be used to call IE hidden], but will help during diagnostics.

A question: Do you use a screen saver? IF so, what is this
    application/screen.

  6. If Internet Explorer has stopped responding it will not report the full
detail (eg, the current site) and the only thing that will appear in the
list will be the name of the executable - IExplore. The expanded
description only appears when it is active and functional. So what you are
    seeing is normal behaviour.

Just copy the error message verbatim into a post and someone will have a go
    at identifying the cause.

  7. AVG 7 hasn't been supported for eons, Keith, nor is any current version of
    AVG Anti-virus supported in Win98.

    1. Uninstall AVG via Add/Remove Programs & reboot.

    2. Install Avast4 (Free) or another AV app that's supported in Win98:
    http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

    3. Manually update Avast to the most-current definitions.

    4. Run Disk Cleanup.

    5. Reboot into Safe Mode then run a full system scan with Avast.
