I tried to open an old version of word, when i was asked which program I wanted to use to open it I clicked on word and then everything on my desktop and in the start menu was trying to open with word including Internet Explorer, Live Mail, the welcome centre and so on. Adobe Acrobat was also trying to open in word so I clicked on properties and changed to open with adobe. Now everything is trying to open with adobe.

    Can anyone help?!
This is my work laptop and I need it functioning properly asap

If I understand you right then when you try to open a .exe file then it is trying to open in the wrong program, if so this fix should help you. if it's just the files your having problems with then this won't be much use to you.

I get as far as typing REG IMPORT Exe.reg into the command prompt and it says Error opening the file there may be a disk or file system error.

The problem I am having here is that I am not completely sure what is happening.

You are using Windows7 as your OS. Is this a new computer or an upgrade. What version of word are you using? Adobe?

You seem to be having some association problems but when you say you click on properties, where are you doing that?

How far back did you go with the system restore and do you have any registry backup made at the time you first either got the machine or installed 7?

Right the problem is that your PC can't find the file :)

If you were to say just save it onto your D drive, If available and type D: at the command prompt then REG IMPORT Exe.reg it would work

so the Bigge question is do you have a D Drive, the C drive is a little more complex as you have windows on it and the command prompt will point to C:\Windows\System32

    where did you save Exe.reg? C:\Users\"YourName"\Documents ?

if so open a command prompt as described (CTRL+Shift+Esc hold CTRL and click new task) at the command prompt type CHDIR C:\Users\"yourname"\Documents then press return, then you should be able to enter REG IMPORT Exe.reg and all should work :)

I saved it to the desktop like it told me to. What would I need to type into the command prompt to find it there!?

    that means its in

    C:\Users\"YourName"\Desktop

so you need to type at the command prompt

    CHDIR C:\Users\"YourName"\Desktop

Its quite simple to work out Folder paths, if you Right Click on a folder or shortcut Icon ie one on your desktop, select properties, then select the details tab, it will give you the Name, Type, Folder Path :)

Well I tried that and it said that the operation was succesfull but I still have the same problem. All icons on the desktop and the start menu are still adobe.
However! If i right click on the ocon, go into properties, open file location then the program is there and I can open it fine.

Does this shed anymore light on the matter?!

Are all the Icons the red square Adobe logo?

if you right click on a desktop Icon, select properties, select the Short cut Tab, and under target what does the path say "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Reader9"? and is that the same for all of them?

when you say in the start menu is that just clicking start or is that clicking start all programs?

The target says for example, on google chrome: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe"

    The icons are all adobe
and on the start menu, and start, all programs the icons are all adobe

    Hello Abi,

Although there is the possibility that this problem may be registry damage to the shell icons I've asked one of
our Malware Specialists to take a look at this thread to be sure this isn't being caused by or related to any
    type of malware.

Someone will assist you shortly. In the meantime please follow the instructions here....

    Hi Abi,

There are a few things we could try, that may sort this out.
But first. let's have a better look at what we are dealing with here.

    • Download OTL to your desktop.
right click on the link and select 'Save Link/Target As'.

if you have problems, try this download link:
      OTL
    • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check
    .

    .
    .

    • Now copy the lines in bold below.

      netsvcs
      msconfig
      %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
      /md5start
      eventlog.dll
      scecli.dll
      netlogon.dll
      cngaudit.dll
      sceclt.dll
      ntelogon.dll
      logevent.dll
      iaStor.sys
      nvstor.sys
      atapi.sys
      IdeChnDr.sys
      viasraid.sys
      AGP440.sys
      vaxscsi.sys
      nvatabus.sys
      viamraid.sys
      nvata.sys
      nvgts.sys
      iastorv.sys
      ViPrt.sys
      eNetHook.dll
      ahcix86.sys
      KR10N.sys
      nvstor32.sys
      ahcix86s.sys
      nvrd32.sys
      symmpi.sys
      adp3132.sys
      /md5stop
      %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
      %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
      %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
      %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
      CREATERESTOREPOINT

    • right click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the blue bar) and choose Paste.

      .
      .
    • Click the Run Scan button.

    • Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them with your next reply.

If after getting the reports i feel this thread needs to be moved, i'll move it and inform you.

    Thanks

    Hi Abi,

I see that you have run MBAM, did you actually run it again after the reboot?
    O4 - HKLM..\Run: [Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (reboot)] C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe (Malwarebytes Corporation)

I'd like to see the report from the scan:

    Step 1
    Start Malwarebytes AntiMalware.
    Click on the logs tab.
The logs are date stamped ... double click on the log (the last one) that showed any possible infection items.
    It'll open in notepad.
Please post the report in your next reply.

    Step 2
Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
Copy the lines in bold below. (make sure that :Otl is on the first line )

    :Otl
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - No CLSID value found.
    O3 - HKLM\..\Toolbar: (no name) - Locked - No CLSID value found.
    O20:64bit: - HKLM Winlogon: VMApplet - (/pagefile) - File not found
    O20 - HKLM Winlogon: VMApplet - (/pagefile) - File not found

    O21 - SSODL: WebCheck - {E6FB5E20-DE35-11CF-9C87-00AA005127ED} - CLSID or File not found.

    :commands
    [emptytemp]
    [purity]
    [RESETHOSTS]
    [EMPTYFLASH]

    • Return to OTL,
    • right click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the blue bar) and choose Paste.

      .
    • Click the red Run Fix button.

    • OTL will reboot your system once the fix has completed.
    • After the reboot, you may need to double click OTL to launch the program and retrieve the log.

Copy and paste the contents of the OTL log that comes up after the fix in your next reply.

if you lose the report, there will be a copy here:
    C:\_OTL\MovedFiles

In your next reply, please submit:
    Mbam scan report
    Otl fix report

    Thanks.
