Mankind really shouldn't use the word 'humanity' when referring to ourselves as through the ages we seem to have learned little and inhumanity against man still rages on - huge sigh. It's incredibly sad that so many young men and woman are dying and I bet at times they may wonder if it's worth it. (Thinking of Vietnam when I typed that earlier sentence).

Well only those on the side who wield power, resources and money who would stand to gain from various rebuilding programmes and resource extraction, the common man doesn't win.

I'm pretty sure I will never see the day where there isn't the threat of war, it's a fact that power corrupts and the people we have in charge will use war as an excuse to forcibly correct someone else's ideology to their ations own ideology.
I have my own thoughts on what war may be next but that is too politically charged for this forum, put it this way it will be one big set of dominoes toppling if it does kick off.

Well I think health and safety executive should step in and do a report into making modern warfare safer. but on a serious note, Bullets and guns cost money, so where do the Taliban get their money from? surely if you stop them buying guns and bullets then they wouldn't be able to fight?

It's hard to know what to believe anymore but apparently:

(Quote) "The largest source of the insurgency's funding, according to the report, comes from donations collected door-to-door in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as from wealthy Arab donors in the Gulf region. It downplays direct Taliban involvement in the narcotics trade, but notes that they do collect taxes from opium production in regions they control. It also states that corruption fed by international spending helps fund the insurgency". (Unquote)

[background=rgb(255, 255, 255)]Personally, I don't see a 'winner' in this war. Rather, I see so many parents and friends and loved ones mourning and wondering what the death of their loved one changes - sigh.[/background]

Like you Mara, I don't see a winner either. This war is futile.

Oh watchful, how right you are.

I watch the news and hear of the deaths - all so young and so much to live for, yet dying for what, I wonder. So incredibly sad.

I Do, see a winner, they're called Investment Bankers, they will lend the countries the money to rebuild, knowing they will be able to pay by selling the natural resources under the ground to other countries to keep their economies growing. their are other countries in states of anarchy that harbour natural resources, but they don't have Gas or Oil reserves, and I don't see the powers that be using military action against them.

    Like I said :)

It is a point though, talking specific countries look at LIbya and Syria, two very similar wars with the same sort of umbrella organisation for the rebels, yet we help Libya with aerial and naval support but there has yet to be any meaningful support given to the Syrian rebels other than some weapons and medical supplies.

I know one main difference is the fact that there is no UN resolution behind this matter yet, because of Russian and Chinese vetoes, though they have good reason to be suspicious as I don't think the LIbyan situation was that well handled.
But I suspect the other difference is as Match says about Oil and Gas, I don't know exact figures but I highly doubt Syria is pumping out 2 million barrels of oil a day that Libya does or has as much of an oil reserve as LIbya, the situation in Libya highly benefitted companies like BP when the war was over and was damaging to BP while the war was ongoing at a time when they were having a mass sale of assets to cover the costs of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
