Now that I have added the extra ram do I have to change the number in the virtual memory? Right now the number is at 768. Do I have to change it to around 1500?

    Rick,

The recommended minimum Page File size is 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have in your system.

Personally, I recommend setting a static Page File size that is double the amount of installed RAM.

Otherwise, Windows automatically resizes the Page File according to perceived need. Potentially

resulting in slower system response time. The premise behind the static page file is to take away the

systems responsibility to manage virtual memory for you, and demand higher performance out of it.

The system page file is basically a chunk of your hard drive that is set aside and used as more RAM.

Now, by no means is this more effective than actual RAM, but it can and often does help greatly.

If you don't already know how to do this, go here .

Hi allheart55, yes it is windows xp and it is showing 1.49gb of ram. Kojack, in the page file it is showing
    initial is 756
    maximum is 1512

    at the bottom it says

    recommended 2287mb
    currently allocated 756
if i change the initial to 1500 should the maximum stay at 1512? Or should I put it higher than 1500

    Good morning Rick,

    I would set both at 3000 MB's.

Good morning kojak, I set them both as you suggested and at the bottom now it says recommended 2287 and allocated 3000. Is that ok or should I drop it below the recommended amount? Sorry I am still working my way up the learning ladder

It's fine the way it is. Remember, you want a "static" Page File.

The objective being preventing Windows from auto-sizing the Page File.

    P.S.

No apology necessary. There was a time I didn't know PC's needed defragmenting,
until mine started crashing because it had never been done.

ok thanks, I just learned something else. Its nice to have a computer thats runs like a rabbit instead of a turtle. Now maybe now it will play nice with a firewall other than the xp firewall. Thanks again kojak and have a great day.

You're welcome. Since the advent of XP SP2, The Windows firewall is an adequate firewall.

It just isn't as proactive as (let's say) the Zone Alarm Firewall. Which I personally use.
