    Hi all:

After a long time on WindowsXp my old computer died an I now have a new one with Windows7 on it. I made several new folders an I attempted to add some photos. I did not suceed. Help, how do I do this easily without the picture becoming an icon for that folder?

    Thanks

    Hi,

You could open the folder > shrink it to a smaller size ( use the icon between the - and the red X top right of page.)
Then either copy and paste the photos into the open folder - or drag them there and drop them into the open folder.

I guess I should tell what I am attempting to accomplish. I am trying to download photos from the WEB an then use them to make avatars etc. The programs I will be using are PSP9 an animation shop3. Where should I store the photos? I had this down pat with WindowsXP. How do I accomplish this using Windows7?

    Thanks

I would think that files you download from the web will be in your Downloads folder. This can be reached by clicking the Start orb/button > Documents > and then on the left of the screen click Downloads. This is where your downloaded files will be.

Just highlight the files you want to copy and then Hit Ctrl + C on your keyboard to copy them. Navigate to the folder you want to keep them in, and once there, Hit Ctrl + V to paste them into the new folder.

Hi Wildman. KenB and PSEFrank's advice are correct ways to save your Web Images to a folder in Windows7.

At what point are you having difficulty exactly?

Found out about the sniping tool. Keep in mind everything about Windows7 is new to me and it does not exactly function like WindowsXP did so how to accomlish things like adding pictures to a folder and then how to use them an resize them etc. is a learning curve for me.

    Thanks

Moving files/images around, or copying/pasting in Windows is a totally seperate subject to methods or techniques for editing images/avatars.

I would suggest that we use this thread for the do's and don'ts of how to move files around in Windows, including, how to navigate in Win 7.

Any advice that myself or other members may have regarding actually editing images/graphics would be better suited to the...Graphics Design and Photo Editing forum. Follow the link below and click Start New Topic. For example you could name your topic...How do I make an Avatar?

    http://computerhelpforums.net/forum/47-graphics-design-and-photo-editing/

Ok, moving back to downloading and placing an image in the folder of your choice. Try this:
    • Click Start orb > Pictures and now Right Click in empty space and select New > Folder. Name your new folder something like My Web Pics. You now have a new folder inside of the Pictures Folder.
    • Go to your favourite website for downloading pics/images and download an image...any image you like, but be aware that some images may be subject to copyright.
    • By default anything you download will go into your Downloads folder. But you will be given an option to navigate to any other folder you choose. Navigate to your new My Web Pics folder and click Save.
Note: You should always scan any downloaded files for viruses, etc.
    • Your new downloaded image is now in the My Web Pics folder, and ready to be opened up in your graphics program for editing and resizing.
Please post back as to how this little exercise goes for you...

    Reminder!
If you're happy that you have your new file safely stored in the correct folder...Now use the link above to go to the Graphics Forum. There you will learn how to edit and resize your image...

Hi, good to hear of good progress, and just to mention there are some very good and free programs available for general picture editing. If interested, we can make some recommendations.

Hi, OK I will start the ball rolling with two I use, one of which, once you learn how to use the various parts is extremely good, fairly simple to learn and can do a heck of a lot.
It is called Photofiltre, as is usual the company also make a paid for version and are keen to push it, but if you only want the free version, at least at first to see how it works, then be sure to download that free version.
    From here=

    http://photofiltre.f...r/frames_en.htm

That link goes to a page listing the various improvements as each version was created, you need to look to the left of the page and click on "Downloads" which then takes you to the page to download it from. Take note that the Ask tool bar is an optional addition, make sure you untick that as that tool bar is more trouble than it is worth.

Complicated I know, but they do want to push their paid for version.

Next is PhotoScape, an even simpler to use editor, but also has an animation section for either creating your own animations or looking at and editing animations, which I think you will find useful.
    From here=

    http://www.photoscap...in/download.php

A lot easier to get as this organisation are keen to make free stuff.

Any further help you may need, don't hesitate to ask. I found some differences in Windows 7 a bit difficult to get my head round, so I am more than willing to help.
I can do demonstration video too for most aspects, and would be more than happy to have another play at making one.

I am sure that PSE Frank and also DSTM will also have their own recommendations as they are both keen on this subject.

Yipie! I once again have figured out how to do animated avatars. PSP-9 an Animation-3 work like a charm. Figuring out how to do the folders in witch to store them etc. took me a wee bit of time. Sadly Sqirlz Water Reflection does not appear to be compatable with Windows7.

    Thanks

Hi Wildman, I forgot to mention IrfanView, this is a handy program for taking an existing animation to bits and storing the individual frames wherever you want to put them. You can also work with individual frames in it as well, though not quite as good as Photofiltre for doing that.
Irfanview can be downloaded from here=

    http://www.irfanview.com/

An edit to say I have the latest Squirlze and it works OK on my W7, so give it another go from the website download, you may have an older version that isn't compatible.

I also mess around now and then with animating, as my signature shows as I made that myself.

I did find a version of Sqirlz an down loaded it. It installed okay an appears to be working. Now just a matter of downloading some workable pictures an then applying Sqirlz to them. Think I'll play around with it this comming week.

    Thanks

If you are downloading photos from the web in Windows 7 they will be saved in Downloads folder in user profile icon such as Wildman (if your profile name on your computer is Wildman). Open that Downloads folder and copy those photos you want to shift in a new folder. Then go to that new folder and simply paste them by Ctrl+v.

Now if you want they should not become avatar icons for that new folder, change the view by right clicking in that folder anywhere except on any of the photos to tiles/ list/icons or detail.
