    Hello,

I don't understand why I can't get the summation sign to display in MS Word or MS notepad?

I looked up the character set that Windows usually uses whcih is code page 437... here it is:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_page_437

Here, I can do "Alt" and "171" and we get the 1/2 symbol. But what if we want the summation symbol??? I tried to do
"ALT" and "228" and got this symbol "รต" ????

How are we supposed to get any symbol thats part of the 437 code page character set using our keyboard keys only.
I know we can do it using the "Insert" and then "symbol" buttons which are part of the Word's menu system. But that's not what I want.
I would like to know how to do this solely using the keyboard keys with "alt"+"#" and so on!! Is this at all possible?

Can anyone please demystify this for me... confused!

    Thanks for all feedback!

    Regards
    Rob

Hi Rob, I haven't a clue how to answer you but I do like to at least acknowledge that a post has been read and that someone will come along with some insight. What I do think they will want to know is what version of these office programs you are using.. It may be also be a good idea to go to your Character Map in systems tools and show us exatly what symbol you mean. (I am trying not to admit that I don't know what you mean by a summation symbol  )

    Click the Office button.

    Select Word Options.

    Click Customize.

In the bottom of the window, click the Customize button beside Keyboard shortcuts.

In the Customize Keyboard box, locate the command for which you would like to edit the keyboard shortcut.
Start by selecting the category. For each category, the commands will appear at the right side of the window.
When you select one, a brief description will appear at the bottom of the dialog box.

The current shortcut key, if there is one, will appear in the Current keys box.

Click inside the box labeled Press new shortcut key.

Press the shortcut key you would like to use. Include the Ctrl, Shift, or Ctrl + Shift keys.

If the shortcut key is currently assigned, Word will tell you what command currently uses the shortcut key.

You can reassign the shortcut key, or you can select a new one.

Choose whether you'd like to save the shortcut key in the Normal template (all documents) or only the current document.

Click Assign when you have finished with your changes.

    Select Close.

I don't know what the problem is Rob but if that was not intended to be rude it certainly comes across that way. We do not tolerate rudeness particularly toward someone try to help you.

Now I asked you a few questions and you ignored them completely and then you apparently want allheart to re read your post until she gets your point..

The ball is now in your court. If you feel that your post has been misinterpreted then it is your job to make it clear. Not allheart's job to take your test.
