I'm pretty careful about downloading freeware and always run it through both Sygate and Malwarebytes before opening and installing it - but do have a question about the software I installed a few minutes ago.

Got it from http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/ - where I've downloaded several other programs and never before had any concern - and it's called 'Quick Image Resizer' ...
and I aborted the installation when Sygate flew up a warning ... clicked "Put in quarantine" and then Avira "cleaned computer" ... so don't have a problem, thankfully.

But would someone please be kind enough to take a peek at the below and see if perhaps what it's showing could be a 'false positive' perhaps?

    Thanks so much!

Hi Mara,I tried to download the same Program from GAOTD, and got the same as you.

I deleted everything, and run my  Avira and MalwareBytes, to be on the safe side.
Did look a handy Program.  :)

Rowall5555's AV didn't pick up anything,so probably a False Positive.

A false positive is a good thing, that's for sure - whew - thanks, Doug! I'd rather have a zillion of these than even one nasty slipping through.

Hi Mara, you've had some bad luck with this particular piece of software. And it should be stated that there is no such thing as 100% security when it comes to downloading anything over the internet. Your own normal diligence has born testiment to this on this occasion.

However, there are some web sites that we can be reasonably confident of when downloading our software. Examples such as Apple, Adobe, and of course Microsoft come to mind. These company's have alot to lose if they where to allow the software they supply to become tainted in any shape or form.

But what if the software we need cannot be purchased from one of the big companys? We then have to trust our own judgement or the judgement of a trusted friend.

My own personal recommendation when seeking new software to download from the internet is Cnet at Download.com. All software and downloads from Cnet are tested for viruses/malware. And in addition to this all of the software is either Freeware, Shareware, or free to try. There are thousands of programs available.

It should be noted that this is only a personal recommendation, and others may have ideas of their own. Check out the link below to see whats available.

I agree with the comment about CNet - though I have other favorites, too.

Mara, I saw the offer for that program and would likely have downloaded it, except that I'd just installed such a program.

Look here: http://computerhelpf...-image-resizer/ Works quite well for me!

Frank, C-Net is a terrific site - all sort of great program waiting to be tried out!

And thanks for the link to an alternative photo resizer, KlickKatt - it'll be great to have as it takes 'forever' to do hundreds one at a time - wahoo!!

It would seem that this was a false positive:

    http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/forums/topic/8872

    http://www.exedb.com/QPR.html

QPR.exe can be related to malware, but depends on the file size or the folder it resides in.
Maybe Avira only checked for the name and not the file size.

Thanks for confirming it was a 'false positive', Starbuck! :)
