I have been watching the opening ceremonies on a BBC stream and watched a hilarious film regarding the entry of Queen Elizabeth into the Olympic Stadium. I won't ruin it for those who will be watching on NBC tonight and only hope they show it.

It does, however, remind me of my unabashed admiration for Her Majesty. When I was a boy in diapers the Queen turned 18 and, over the misgivings of the King, joined the WAT and remained on active service through the war.

Tom Brokaw called that generation "the greatest Generation" and among them was Princess Elizabeth ( No. 230873 Second Subaltern Elizabeth Windsor). So whatever your thought are about the relevance of the British Monarchy (or your inclination to make jokes at her expense) let us not forget a princess who could easily have been removed to safety but chose to serve her country on what in truth was a front line of the war.

She has a great history and also a long and happy future, I hope!

We just watched the opening event ceremonies and isn't it wonderful how Her Majesty chose to 'participate' - loved it!

Enjoyed the entire thing ... well, well done!

(Hope she's feeling okay as she's not looking too well - nor too happy - at least on the part that we've been able to watch).

Yeah the 'entry' by the Queen was epic :), the Ceremony wouldn't have meant much to people without some knowledge of British History (heck it wouldn't have made sense to some Brits either, being in their own little bubble and all), but I thought it was good, especially liked Rowan Atkinson bit :D.

As for the Queen, I'd probably get myself sent to the tower for this, but she must have sat on a nail or something, she didn't smile once (not that she smiles much anyway) and there wasn't any enthusiasm at all when she read her bit at the end, I'm not expecting an 85 year old woman(think shes 85) to be jumping all over the place but she could have at least smiled.

The government being nearly broke anyway, must have told her majesty that she is footing the bill for it all

The Queen has always carried out her duties with Dignity.
Agree her Majesty could smile more.
I certainly wouldn't like her duties.

At 86 ( April 21 1926 ) I would be a bit low being asked to sit through a pageant that only started at 9-00 pm and lasted 3.5 hours
She is expected to have the resolve of a 40 year old and to perform no matter what.

How many other 86 year olds even sat up and watched the opening ceremony ?
I suspect most had been tucked up in bed long before the 12-30 am finish.

When she was featured she must have been absolutely shattered.

She is also bound by protocol. There are ways that she must act in certain given circumstances.

She is a credit to our country.
