OK I think this is sort of covered by the Backup forum or the general windows Forum I'm undecided so once I have decided I will move this for you ;)

But the "easiest" way is to remove the hard drive from your old machine and plug it into your new machine, your new machine even has a esata port on the rear so you don't even have to open the case ;) just get the right cable, however this is the most technical way. then you will be able to just drag and drop in windows.

the simplest has to be to just connect both machines over your network, if you don't have a spare wireless card or USB Dongle then, you can Hard wire the one using an Ethernet cable, and transfer the files across the network. (Probably the Best option)

A more time consuming option would be to use a USB Drive and to transfer the files to this then to your new PC,

my least favourite and probably the longest most time consuming would be to burn all your files to DVD, then transfer them that way,

For me I would always go with the top option, but normally because I build my own PC's the drive would end up in the new PC any way, But if your not the most technically of minded people then the second option has to be the best unless your not familiar with networking two or more PC's together, then the use of an external USB drive has to be the best, and even if you have to go out and buy one, you then have it to back up your files with ;)

The old DVD backing up option I think is slowly starting to die, and by the end of this year my only use for DVD's will be for film rental, or to buy a film on before its transferred to my PC,

Quite often wonder on the legalities of downloading a film if I have bought a copy of it, and its unopened in the loft  but would never do it as I'm not into free Viruses ;)

peoples interpretation of 'transfer' mean different things.
do you mean just photos and data or do you mean the whole lot?

Photos and Data can be done as Match has suggested, but for a complete transfer in terms of settings and accounts etc, there is a wizard you can use within windows, I am unsure how it works in W7, but in XP to Vista (I think Polo did not too long ago, so if he can jump in and advise :D )
