403 error

    When I access the microsoft update site I get the above error after the
    activeX check. This is the second time in 5 days that I have had this happen
    to me but prior to this I have never had this problem. Can anyone tell me
    why this has suddenly started to occur. I managed to find a link to update
    the 'update software' but I am struggling to find that link. This solved the
    problem but I want to stop it occurring again.

    I have managed to track down the KB relating to this problem (KB245142) but
    the solution is not working this time. Last time I used it I had no problems
    but this time no deal. Following the link provided in the first resolution I
    managed to restore windows update. This time I had to follow the second
    resolution for windows NT but the file wuv3is.dll is not to be found on my
    system and the 'C:\program files\windowsupdate' is completely empty. Unless
    there is some other file/folder I should be looking for I do not know which
    way to go now.

    The links you provided refer to new or repair installations which does not
    apply to me. I have successfully been accessing windows update previously
    (up to about 5 days ago) with no problem and have not performed a reinstall
    or new install. I have not installed anything new for a few weeks now and
    non of my AV or spyware scans have removed anything.

    The download worked. Not the link.

    According to the log I had v7.2.6001.788 installed and up to date on the
    12/9/2009 then on the 19/9/2009 i had v7.2.6001.788 installed and required
    v7.4.7085.142. I then followed the link and
    successfully updated to v7.4.7085.142 (this was when I first had the
    problem.) I then had the same problem again today but the above link would
    not work. The log stating I had v7.4.7085.142 and required v7.4.7600.226.
    It looks to me that the required update is not being allowed to install. I
    have not altered anything I know of to cause this to happen.
