Much to my surprise and horror, my yahoo email account was hacked at approximately 4:00 am this morning.
There were 8 password request email notifications, 3 of them were mine and the other 5 were made from
a IP address (41.71.188.32) located in Nigeria. They sent a scam email asking for money to my entire address
    book.

They deleted all of my personal folders, email and contacts. My account information had been changed. My birth date, reply to
address, and alternate email contact address had all been altered. They created a filter that caused all incoming email to be sent
straight to the trash can. In the "From" line was VIRUS!!! rcxxx@yahoo.com. I have literally lost hundreds of saved emails that
contained receipts, invoices and order numbers as well as license keys. I'm pissed!

I actually got 2 of them. Just out of curiosity I clicked on "reply" and the address looked legit to the naked eye but on taking a closer look there was actually a small vowel change in the address which would probably go unnoticed.

My Yahoo account was hacked a few weeks ago, and all of my contacts got weird emails from me. I had to change my details. :(

I received a call from my bank this morning. They were also the recipient of the scam email.
They hot listed our debit cards and shut down our online banking. They insist that they cannot
be sure the account wasn't breached by the same person that hacked my yahoo email. I tried
to explain that one has nothing to do with the other but they were insistent. It will take over
a week to replace the debit cards and change the online account numbers. Ridiculous! :bnghd:

Yahoo was able to recover my address book intact earlier today. I'm still waiting for a reply on whether
or not my emails can be recovered. It's not looking good....

Add me to the list of hacked Yahoo accounts. In all honesty I had forgot about it and hadn't used since I switched over to gmail. After some research I found my email address was part of the Yahoo database hack a couple months back. Nothing lost for me. I told Yahoo to just close it since I don't use it and don't see myself ever using it again.

When my contacts were recovered earlier this morning I immediately exported them to Outlook and deleted them from my Yahoo account.
All of my personal folders and email were recovered less than 5 minutes ago. Hallelujah!! I didn't think I would ever see them again. I don't
want to risk losing hundreds of emails containing serial numbers, license keys and irreplaceable receipts ever again. That being said, I'm going
to take a friends excellent advice and in the morning I will purchase Yahoo's Mail Plus. I'm going to pop it using Outlook and I won't be leaving
any messages on the server. Once the Yahoo email address is set up using Outlook and I have all emails, folders etc. downloaded, I will make a
new image file with Acronis. I'll always have my email backed up and never have to deal with this crap again...

BTW : I was told that my Yahoo user name and password was one of the 450,000 accounts that were compromised on July 11th, 2012.

I don't know if I'm in the group of hacked emails, but I have an old Yahoo account which hasn't had any odd activity, I did notice that they have got a second sign-in verification check in beta (under Account Info) which can send a code to your mobile phone via SMS, so similar to the Gmail 2 step sign in but using SMS rather than generating a code on your phone (via an app), I've already been using the Gmail one since it was started but have enabled the Yahoo one as well to be a bit safer.
You can either use a Secret Answer or SMS Code or just an SMS Code, so might be of use to people who are using Yahoo or just want to secure the old one like me.

I rarely use my Yahoo mail account but had done the secure sign-in bit awhile back. Of course I had to go check when I read this topic, but all looked okay. What a pain to have this happen!

Well, thank you for that advice Kayrose. I'll be sure to do that more frequently.
Of course, changing your password, no matter how often you do it, is no defense
against the illegal software these hackers use to crack your password.
