It's not difficult at all to replace the hard drive.

The Dell install disk should work perfectly.

The HDD will be recognized on boot.

Let us know how you fare...

Anytime and you're most welcome Rick.

Remember, the sata cables will only fit one way. Don't force them.....

Hi allheart, I recieved the new hard drive and you were right. I was very easy to change, a whole 5 minutes. The computer recognized it no problem and I formated and installed xp without any hiccups. The links for the chipset driver and video driver you posted are newer than the ones on my driver cd so should I update those two or just leave well enough alone?

    Hi Rick,

Replacing the chipset should be done immediately. It's listed as urgent.
The other drivers are considered optional. Glad to hear you have it all
    sorted out.

Hi allheart, do I have to uninstall the old chipset driver first then install the new one?

No it's not necessary Rick, just install the new chipset and restart your computer.

Hi, just caught up on this thread, so I am glad you sorted the hard drive as I suspected that right at the start. I will leave Allheart to continue, I would not as yet remove the old chipset drivers till she gets back to you and actually says to do it.
    Nev.

Hi Rick, sorry 'bout that. :bnghd:

In the Device Manager under the chipset (+) select Property. In the Properties window select the driver tab.
Click the update driver button. The Hardware Update Wizard should begin. Answer "NO" to the question, "Can
Windows connect.......?" then click the Next button. To the "What do you want the wizard to do? question, choose
Install from a list or specific location. Click next. Select Don't search, I will choose the driver to install.
Browse to the location of the new chipset and follow continued directions.

Hi allheart, I followed you instructions right to the end where I browse to the chipset driver but it does not show up in this box. I posted a screenshot of what is showing and it is not there. I dont know if I should just forget about it or not. I am not having any issues with the older driver. Although I would like to find out why I cant update it.

    Hi Rick,

When you downloaded the newer Dell chipset did you place it in Windows XP > Drivers Folder?
The Device Manager will only read INF Files from Windows XP folder. (If you're still having
trouble updating chipset, you can usually get it through Windows Update)

    Hi allheart

I cant seem to find the windows XP>drivers folder or find anything on windows update. I guess I will just leave it alone. You have more important stuff to help others out with. I appreciate your help you have given me.

    Hi Rick

have you looked in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS ?

and have you also checked that you have set the folder options to show hidden files?

Next time I'm passing through Canada, I'll stop off and smack you round the face with a fresh Mackerel for saying things like that. :lglaf:

(If you remember irc, or its derivatives you may actually get the joke :snckr: any one still use that?)

Hi Match, Got your message loud and clear. Let me know when your comming and i'll put the coffee on. You can leave the Mackeral at home though, it might be a little ripe by the time you get here. lol. I downloaded the chipset driver to c:\ windows\system32\drivers and I cant find it in the folder anywhere.

    Hi Rick,

Try renaming the chipset to ( chipset2011 ) before downloading it.
