XP System Crashed

    The other day I got off the computer, shut it down, took care of some things, then went back on a little later. Now, this was very odd. When turning it on I found that after one of the screens (for XP users, it was after I saw the 3 green rectangles go under the XP logo and then I was waiting to see "welcome".) after that one was blue, and I saw it for about a millisecond, then my computer restarted. I had not gotten to the desktop, I had not gotten my welcome message. So, on the "HP Invent" screen (first one), I hit F10 to begin system restore. This however didn't work. I chose the non-destructive system restore option, let it go, then it brought me to the screen with the XP logo, but instead of three green triangles it said "Please wait...". I waited a little bit and then a screen pops up that said a .nls file could not be found. It then says to tell the computer what directory this file is it. I chose many different ones (my mouse couldn't be used, don't know why that happened) and finally I chose C:\Windows\i386. I knew that directory had some meaning so I tried that one. Luckily, it didn't say that it wasn't found in that directory, the screen just went away. About 30 or 40 files of that were in that directory. I then waited and waited, no response. Finally I rebooted the whole system and now I'm back to the factory-shipped version. I've been meaning to do this for some time now and I did, but still, any idea what could have caused this blue screen to pop up and not allow me to be able to log into my computer and use it?

    More than likely a hardware or driver problem.
    Did you install any new hardware or update any drivers?

    How about windows security patches? I've found that if you download and install too many of them at once, they tend to confuse eachother, leaving you with a messed up system.

    That could be it. How do I tell which to get and which not to get?

    Well, you should get them all. But some dont seem to cooperate on all systems. And be careful if you want to remove them, alot depend on others, so you have to uninstall in the right order.
