Xbox One Elite Controller on PC issue

Hey everyone,

I am having an odd issue with my Xbox One Elite controller with my PC. I don't recall ever having this issue in the past. I have not played any PC games the last couple months due to time restaints, but fired up a couple games this past weekend.

First off, I have the Xbox One Elite controller connected to my PC via USB cable. This is my PC setup via PC Parts Picker:

Now, this has happened just recently with 2 games - Dying Light and WWE 2k17. I have not tried playing any games since I did a restart, but I tried several other fixes when I was having this issue. What is happening is, I will boot up a game with the Elite controller plugged in. No issues at first. Then at random times, the controller will just stop responding, and none of the buttons will work in game. Hitting ALT+Tab seems to re-trigger the controller to work again in both games. In Dying Light, not only does the controller stop responding, but all the audio in the game mutes. After ALT+Tab is pressed and I retunr back to the game, everything goes back to normal.

I have tried different USB ports - a couple in the front of the case and one directly plugged into the back of the motherboard. I am not sure if these ports where 3.0 or 2.0 USB. I youtubed the issue, and one user said to just re-install the drivers for the Elite controller. I tried that, and it seemed to fix the issue for a while, but it started up again.

Does any one have any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Not sure about the xbox elite controller but I know the wireless xbox 360 controller was a problem for some. The fix was to boot up without the controller and then once booted plug the controller in.

 

Yea, That's how I do it every time. I always plug in after it's all booted up. so that's not a working fix for me. Thanks for the reply though.

Anyone else have any suggestions? I can't get any replies on Steam discussion forums or other PC help forums I have posted this one...

 

Ok guys,

I can now confirm this is NOT just my Xbox One Elite controller doing this, so I think this is most definitely a driver issue of some sort. This issue was occurring with my Xbox One Elite controller while it was connected via USB cable. I am not sure what I did yesterday that made the issue go away all day, but I was able to play several different games at different times of the day without any issues. Once I rebooted my PC, the issue came back.

I went into device manager, un-installed the Xbox One controller drivers, reinstalled them, problem continued, I then tried connecting my Xbox One S controller via wireless Bluetooth, and the issue happens with that controller as well. I have been looking all over the internet for answers on this, and I can't seem to find anyone with a solid solution or the exact same problem I am having...

 

What Operating System?

 

Windows 10 pro. It has anniversary update and when I search for Windows updates, it says it is all updated.

 

I had a like issue with a Graphics Driver. On reboot Windows10 deletes the good driver and installs a Generic Driver.
You need to stop Windows 10 installing Generic Drivers.
This may be your problem.

 

It's showing my the Xbox One driver is what is installing. I have uin-installed and re-installed it several times right from the controller.

 

Please read my previous post carefully.
You install the correct driver and as you said on reboot all turns to crap again.
No matter what driver you install Windows may be deleting and installing a generic driver instead.
Windows will do this if the driver is not signed.

 

Idk if this is controller related now though.... It's almost like something is punishing my games to the background. Example, when I am playing Dying Light, the audio gets muted and the camera on the game will start spinning in whatever direction my analog stick was last in. Once I ALT+Tab, the audio comes back as well as the controller.

 

Ok, here is another detail that tells me it might not be a controller driver issue. I have noticed that anytime I am running a game through Steam, and I use the ALT+Shift feature to send text chats to friends, the controller doesn't stop functioning. Once I stop using the keyboard to type to friends, it is shortly after that where the controller will stop working. This JUST happened to me, and I didn't have to hit ALT + TAB to get it to come back. I simply tapped the Windows key on my keyboard and the controller came back.

Does this info help generate some other possible fixes?

 

That sounds to me like a Graphics Driver.
ALT+TAB switching from full screen and vice versa, makes me think graphics.
Check if there is a graphics Driver update available.
Audio driver is normally installed with your Graphics driver.

I did check you thread on another Site. They weren't much help.

 

I just got a Graphics driver update yesterday.... it was doing this before that update, and still after.

And yes, it's been frustrating. This forum is the only one I have really gotten any replies on.

It's almost like the USB port goes to sleep or something, and my Keyboard wakes it up. the controller doesn't stop functioning as long as I type on my keyboard to my steam friends. Once I don't use the keyboard for an extended period of time, that's when the controller will stop functioning. Idk what is causing this, but it didn't do this at all yesterday and I didn't really type to any steam friends. It started up again today after I did a re-boot.

 

Some games don't like USB3 Ports (BLUE)
USB2 Ports (BLACK)
I would be using the USB2 Ports till this is sorted.
Again, stop Windows10 Driver updates till this is sorted. Do you know how?

To disable the driver updates? No, I do not exactly know how. I have mostly USB 3 ports on my board, but this issue has happened with both 2.0 and 3.0 ports. I have tried different ports to test it.

Could even be a weak Power Supply.
A process of elimination.

 

My power supply is a brand new Seasonic platinum. And I do all sorts of media related things as I run a small project studio. I have USB audio interfaces, I transfer large multiple gig files from high end production cameras, ect. Nothing else has ever given me any issues.
