    Sometimes just rebooting fixes it.
Clean the keyboard to make sure there is nothing preventing the key from registering.
If it is a USB try a different port or try a different keyboard.
Check the system configuration make sure it is correct.
When you press the & what comes up could be the Shift key may be faulty.

Thanks for your interest in computerhelpforums doulton. What would be the primary difference in your friends unit and yours that would allow his/her's to work correctly and yours not. What would be the operating system that your friend uses and what was the keyboard model that your friend has?

Still say check the system to make sure that is has the proper keyboard lay out.

I have a uncle that has an Italian keyboard on his laptop and when it messes up I have to go in and reconfigure the keyboard back to Italian Layout for the keys to work properly.

Very good idea Rusty. I think you may have found the answer.

I had a machine in here that was set for Spanish. I couldn't log into it because the user's password had a character (and I think it was the *) that wasn't recognized when I typed it in. I had to change the keyboard from Spanish to English for it to work. There was an icon in the bottom right of the taskbar that allowed changing the language.

Have you gone back through the keyboard settings (layout) to make sure they are still correct? Is there an Alt Gr key? Have you tried that.

    What else have you tried?
