i know just enough about computers to really mess something up.......bought a wireless router..installed on my pc fine...laptop shows that network is connected....internet will load for about 20 seconds then disconnects....i put the wire to the laptop and internet works fine...have had the laptop on other wireless networks before with no problems...have norton antivirus on the laptop....i did enter the keycode on the laptop, but it never asked me for the network password when it did connect.....please help!!! i am ready to chunk it out the window!!!!
disc cover says to insert disc in other computers that you want to connect with the router...did that and got nothing....it just wants to install the router just like it did on the pc

Can you let us know the make and model number of your router?

I am a little confused. How many machines do you want to connect to this wireless network. Have you checked the wireless network settings TCP/IP on each making sure that they are being obtained automatically.

tried it again this morning....like the computer fairy was going to come in the night and fix everything--ha!! internet will not connect so i click on "diagnose conenction problems" it gives me three choices: plug a cable into the network adapter "network bridge", view wireless networks, or automatically get new ip settings--so i click new ip settings. it says that did not fix the problem--tried unplugging the modem, that did not work. so iclick on the network, and same thing, it connects and will load a page for about 20 seconds then disconnects. So this is probably going to sound really stupid, but what is a network bridge and do i need that? and what is the network adapter? you think that is the problem??

we must have been typing at the same time.....sorry.....i have only one laptop

under "network adapters" it says select the adapters you want to use to connect to computers on your local network, then there are two boxes, local area connect and wireless network connection. do i need to click the wireless network connection box? and unclick the other one?

OK I am really not sure we are talking about the same things. You are here now. How are you connected in order to post. You mention a PC and a laptop. I am pretty clear that the laptop is not connecting but what about the PC? Tell us what you see when you choose View Wireless connections. (In both the one that is connected and the one that is not.) If the one that is working is attached by ethernet cable just concentrate on the one you want to work wirelessly. If you know how to do a screenshot that would be helpful.

Go here and click on "Product Manual". Download/open Manual it has step by step instruction for setting up a wireless connection.

WPA2 is the most secure connection. You have to login to the router to set up the connection parameters first.

    Lizzie,

Below is copy from manual entitled "Getting Started". This is where you should have begun.

The DIR-601 includes a Quick Router Setup Wizard CD. Follow the simple steps below to run the Setup Wizard to guide you quickly through the installation process. You may manually configure your router without the wizard. Refer to the next page to manually setup your router.
Insert the Quick Router Setup Wizard CD in the CD-ROM drive. The step-by-step instructions that follow are shown in Windows® XP or Vista®. The steps and screens are similar for the other Windows® operating systems.
If the CD autorun function does not automatically start on your computer, go to Start > Run. In the run box type “D:\DIR601.exe” (where D: represents the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive).
When the autorun screen appears, click Install Router and follow the on-screen instructions.

I do not show any wireless networks on the desktop pc that is connected by ethernet cable. I thought when i installed the wireless router on the desktop, that it set up the wireless network on the desktop automatically...do i need to set up a wireless network on the desktop?

Your first connection to the router will always be wired, whether Desktop or laptop.

Let's clarify. Your Ethernet cable from your modem is plugged into the WAN port on the router.
You have an Ethernet cable running from LAN 1, 2, 3 or 4 to your Desktop. You've run the installation disc for the router. Right ?

You need to follow Kojak's instructions for your laptop. As for the PC it may well be that there is no wireless network card installed. How old is the PC and what is the make and model? If it is not wireless capable then there is no point in troubleshooting it. You do not need a wireless connection if it is working off your LAN (wired) connection and you don't need to move it to accommodate anything.

    Lizzie,

Don't get frustrated. There was a time when I didn't even know Windows computers occasionally need to be defragmented (until mine started crashing).:)

Okay. Here we go. These instructions are specific to your D-Link dir601.

1.(on your Desktop) Log into the web-based configuration by opening a web browser and entering the IP address of the router in the address bar (192.168.0.1). Click on Setup and then click Wireless Settings on the left side.
    2. Next to Security Mode, select WPA-Personal.
    3. Next to WPA Mode, select Auto, WPA2 Only, or WPA Only. Use Auto if you have wireless clients using both WPA and WPA2. (WPA2 is best)
    4. Next to Cypher Type, select TKIP and AES, TKIP, or AES. If you have wireless clients that use both types, use TKIP and AES. (I recommend AES)
    5. Next to Group Key Update Interval, enter the amount of time before the group key used for broadcast and multicast data is changed (3600 is default).
    6. Next to Pre-Shared Key, enter a key (passphrase). The key is entered as a pass-phrase in ASCII format at both ends of the wireless connection. The pass-phrase must be between 8-63 characters.
    7. Click Save Settings to save your settings. If you are configuring the router with a wireless adapter, you will lose connectivity until you enable WPA-PSK on your adapter and enter the same passphrase as you did on the router.

Before we set up your wireless adapter, What OS do you have on your laptop ?
