My step-dad's laptop is failing to connect to our wireless. I have tried everything. The settings are correct. I've tried manually setting up the wireless, restarting the wireless. My personal laptop and my mother's laptop connect fine to the wireless. The desktop (connected by cable) connects fine to the internet. It's only the one laptop that refuses to connect. The laptop that will not connect is a HP Pavilion dv9000 and the wireless router is a Sky one. Any help would be useful before i get murdered for not knowing something LOL ^__^

Have you tried connecting it to the router with an Ethernet cable?

Is it "seeing" your home network?

Is it set to obtain an IP and DNS address automatically?

Make sure the basics are correct such as the encryption type set right WEP, WAP, WEP2 etc TKIP and AES etc. is it set to broadcast the SSID? which is the name of your network?

and that the password is correct (case sensitive etc) if you havent changed the password since setup its all on the bottom of the router/box :D

Yes, yes, yes and yes. Everything is correct. SSID, TKIP, etc. etc. all correct and it's set to automatic IP & DNS retrieval.

What is the OS on your dad's laptop? The one thing that you are not telling is is whether it is showing as connected to the router even if it is not able to connect to the internet.

Heh.. I'm not sure what an OS is but it'll pick up the wireless but won't connect to it at all So i assume that means it's not connecting to the router at all.

The OS stands for operating system. (Windows XP, Vista, 7) I am not sure what you mean that it will pick up the wireless?? Your network should have a name or numerical designation, when you look at your network connections does it show as being connected or available? If we knew your OS it would be a little easier to help you out.

Right so we have establised the basics are correct.

Go to control panel and then Network or Network and sharing - it will give the lappy name and then show your router in the middle and then a globe with a red X.

Has the lappy been used wireless previously? are the drivers installed, is the device enabled?

If all is yes then you may some additional encryption on the modem/router. (which is not common)

With the very limited information you have given us, its hard to establish what has and hasnt been tried, does it work if you connect an ethernet cable direct to the modem/router. (this would indicate its a problem with the lappy as opposed to the modem/router)
